Newly-confirmed EPA administrator Lisa Jackson today reaffirmed her commitment to using hard science as the cornerstone for the EPA’s environmental policy decisions, something she had emphasized during her confirmation hearings before a Senate committee last week.

Her comments underlined a significant shift from the EPA under the Bush Administration, which was criticized by scientists who said their research had been subjected to political interference.

“Science must be the backbone for EPA programs,” Jackson said in a memo to EPA employees. “When scientific judgments are suppressed, misrepresented or distorted by political agendas, Americans can lose faith in their government to provide strong public health and environmental protection.”

In her memo to EPA staff, Jackson said she would make “respect for the EPA workforce a bedrock principle” of her tenure. “EPA should once again be the workplace of choice for veteran public servants and also talented young people beginning careers in environmental protection,” she said, “just as it was for me when I first joined EPA shortly after graduate school.”
