CDC - Study Shows Soda Linked To Kidney Disease, Likely From High-Fructose Corn Syrup Content
Drinking sugary soda is linked to kidney disease, most likely due to the high fructose corn syrup that sweetens the drinks.

People who drink two or more soda drinks per day increase their risk of kidney damage that could lead to kidney disease. The strongest risk was associated with lower weight women and with drinking non-cola sodas.

Underweight women were most at risk. These women had a body mass index (BMI) of 18.7 kg/m2 or less. (BMI is a measure of weight divided by height. Calculate your BMI here.) No association was found with men, with diet soda or with one serving of sugary soda per day. The results are based on data recently published in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The potential cause of the association is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). A link between HFCS and kidney disease is of interest among health officers and nutritionists. Kidney disease - along with diabetes and obesity - has been increasing in the US since manufacturers switched to HFCS as a soft drink sweetener more than three decades ago. A severely diseased kidney quits working and fails to remove wastes from the blood, concentrate urine and regulate electrolytes.

In this present study, David Shoham and colleagues studied 10,000 people to examine the association between daily soda intake and the level of protein markers, known as albumin and creatinine, in the subjects' blood. A high ratio of albumin to creatinine is used to detect early development of kidney disease.

1. I HATE HFCS.... Some can't taste the difference, but I can...
I stopped drinking "sugared" soft drinks with the advent of "NEW COKE" (which "sealed" the deal on HCFS over sugar. Since then (or around then) all soft drink manufacturers switched. They've never tasted the same since....

Younger DUers should get their hands on a Coke bottled in Mexico if you want to tell the difference. They still use sugar.

2. Our Costco has Mexican coke. It does taste better and is less dangerous (no HFCS), but
the sugar content is still not a good thing.

4. No, the sugar is not good, except in major moderation...
and with a more balanced meal to avoid the blood sugar swings.

I switched to unsweetened tea--iced usually. Should be a lot better for me. Only drink diet soft drinks, maybe once or twice a month, as I KNOW those aren't good for us.

9. I put fruity herb teabags like Red Zinger in selzer over ice.
Tasty, refreshing, not sweet. Adult soda.

3. But the HFCS lobby's TV ads tell me that it is "As safe as sugar"
They wouldn't lie would they? :eyes:

5. No, no - they have only your best interests at heart!!
Delicious, refreshing beverages at affordable prices - that's what it's all about!!

:eyes:

OTOH, I have to find a certain satisfaction in that they have been forced to mount a huge PR campaign for the simple reason that

people.don't.want.to.eat.that.shit.anymore

Even Health Nut bread (not that we buy much commercial bread anymore) now features "HFCS-Free" on its bags now. Amazing!

6. Just wait until they truly study the effects of HFCS on the liver and pancreas.

7. It would be interesting see how the findings from the NHANES data stacked up
with another data set or survey from Britin or Australia, countries that have similar characteristics AND THAT don't use high fructose corn syrup in sodas and most other products, but use cane sugar instead.

Obviously, you couldn't replicate the cross sectional in all of its components, but the BCS70 (the British Cohort Study 1970) or even the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) but it would be pretty cool to have a look.

10. So if you only drink sodas without HFCS,
like Mexican Coke and Hanson's Soda, does that mean you'll be okay?

12. Nasty stuff. I think it lowers your PTQ too...
*Pitchfork and Torches Quotient.

Without HFCS and TV, angry mobs would have dragged Bush out of the White House years ago.
