Thorium is not an environmentally safe alternative type of nuclear energy, Norwegian report says
Bad news for the "thorium will save us" crowd.

Thorium is not an environmentally safe alternative type of nuclear energy, Norwegian report says

A new report from the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) has revealed that thorium-based nuclear energy plants – once vaunted as a clean alternative type of nuclear energy – have the same negative environmental consequences as their uranium-based cousins do.

Bellona, 20/10-2008 - Translated by Charles Digges

The newly released NRPA report dealt with the environmental consequences of potential thorium related industry in Norway. The report takes on various aspects of the thorium fuel cycle from mining and extraction, fuel production, reactor operation and waste handling.

The report concludes that the environmental consequences of using thorium-based nuclear power will result in the same problems the world faces today with uranium bases reactors.

“The NRPA invalidated that thorium is kind nuclear power, as many have earlier asserted,” said Nils Bøhmer, Bellona’s daily manager and nuclear physicist.

“Using thorium leads to highly radioactive nuclear waste and the risk of accidents will always be present.”

1. Well, duh!. It doesn't matter which radioactive element they use
All radioactive elements are still...(wait for it)... RADIOACTIVE!

2. I am amazed at how many liberals think nuclear is a viable energy source.
Can't do much with the freeps, but Sheesh!

3. How about Cobalt-Thorium G?
Probably not environmentally safe either, eh?

5. Yes, what about the Doomsday Shroud
Also, we cannot afford a mine shaft gap.

4. Of course, the number of nuclear scientists in Norway - Dangerous Fossil Fuel Exporter - is zero.
In fact, unremarked by dumb radiation paranoids who have contempt for physics and chemistry and all of the sciences, the world's largest thorium dumps have resulted from the manufacture of gas mantles and television sets.

There's a tremendous irony in this: The dumb anti-nuke community whose scientific education consists entirely of watching episodes of the Simpsons, know zero about the radiochemistry of thorium on television, hence their cartoonish knowledge of science. And of course 100% of the anti-nukes couldn't give a rat's ass about dangerous natural gas.

Norway will suddenly begin loving thorium as soon as they have finished dumping dangerous fossil fuel waste into earth's atmosphere, not that they give a rat's ass about filth. They are the 4th largest producers of dangerous fossil fuels in the world, and therefore the 4th largest source of dangerous fossil fuel dumping materials.

All anti-nukes are dangerous fossil fuel apologists. There are zero exceptions.

You scratch the surface of an anti-nuke, you find someone deeply sunk in the dangerous fossil fuels status quo.

Norway has besides vast reserves of stupidity, duplicity some of the world's largest reserves of thorium. However their reserves are relatively trivial compared to those of India and even the United States. A few years ago they were lying to the entire planet about their grand Slipner dangerous fossil fuel waste dumps. Then they found out that they would cost money. End of story.

We won't even talk about the famous Utsira wind-to-hydrogen scam, being hyped here by dumb anti-nukes 4 or 5 years ago.

The vast ignorance - scientific and moral - of the anti-nuke fossil fuel apologist industry is now heading where it belongs: Into the shit hole.

Have a nice day.
