States like Maryland which subsidize fishing promotion
are violating the first amendment rights of Buddhists, Hindus,
vegetarians, vegans, Seventh Day Adventists, Jains, and
many other religions which teach not killing.
The sale of fish brings 54 million to the state of Maryland, whose
governor prevailed on 3 chains in the Washington area to
begin again to sell Chesapeake fish despite the pfiesteria disease
caused by untold trillions of gallons of pig factory farm
sewage being dumped into the Atlantic.
One factor of many in the disease of the fish might be the Calvert
Cliffs nuclear power plant, which raises the temperature of the water
in the area.

3. Wow. I have a tough time with these types of posts.

My family had yellow perch for dinner last night. My oldest daughter caught it on a fishing trip with her grandfather a couple of weeks ago. They had a good day.

If i took it to heart every time someone warned me of the horrible dangers in...well just about every damned thing, i would be too afraid to even breath. Our planet is F***** UP. But my home was built in the 1920's, my child drinks formula out of a plastic bottle (as did his sisters), they play with toys that may have been made in China etc.

I TRY to keep my kids safe. I try and ensure that they do not live with unnecessary dangers but i also want them know that just because life IS A RISK is no reason stop living it. Things (i am not sure which ones yet) WILL kill us eventually. In the meantime I am going to try and ensure that we live the best lives we can, make an effort to give back what we take and love even when it hurts.

4. I own a 5 acre private lake with two other families.

We have the water tested annually by the county extension office. So far there is no issue but there is a subdivision building (actually dormant) upstream that will have septic systems. The main reason to monitor the water is for if/when the water becomes contaminated we will have a record of it's prior state. I don't object to septic tanks. I object to ones that don't work.

My bass are free of "significant" pollution *. There is no such thing as perfect. Remember the whales crap in the ocean too. Just not as much as man does.

There are lots of safe places to fish just look at what is up stream. Farms (especially livestock farms) are not considered good.

6. I've been trying to find recent data on Lake Erie

and generally failing. Most of it sounds like the lake is much healthier then but what is "healthy"?

13. The toxins are more concentrated in navigable waterways

Especially where large ships transit or industry is concentrated. If your lake and stream is fed from underground springs there isn't much chance for the heavy metals and toxins. Those septic systems are mostly bacteriological and perhaps nitrates and coal plants spew mercury in the smokestack emissions. PCBs are left over from their 70s use in electrical transformers - they can turn up in remote locations.

A lot of standard water tests for residential use don't look for heavy metals. You might have to request specific testing if you're worried about that.

14. I would settle for

People not taking 3-5 minutes to figure out that the Stripped Bass they just pulled up is 6 inches too short. I have seen too many dead fish floating by this year from people who either kept them out of the water too long or tore a 5 cent hook out of it's stomach before letting it go.

While were at it my other pet peeve is people who can't be bothered to actually go out three miles before opening the Y-Valve and discharging sewage.
