A project combining solar energy and the re-use of abandoned machinery motors is having a profound impact on the availability of water in rural Nigeria.

Project leader, Dr Adoko Sambwa, says old motors are reconfigured into water pumps and, through the power of the sun, they provide enough water for crop production.

"Initially, we have the young girls and the young boys, travel miles to get water", he says.

"But now we can lift water and pump water to the people, using this local technology, having global impacts.
