Malta’s “greenhouse gas emissions” increased by 41%

Malta’s greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 41% between 1990 and 2003 according to the latest EU Report on how the member states are implementing the Kyoto Protocol. The Report added that it is calculated that by 2010 Malta’s increase in greenhouse gas emissions will have shot up to 123.5%. This runs counter to the EU’s agreed target which wants member states to cut their emissions by 8% of what they were in 1990.

This was revealed in a statement by Labour’s environmental spokespersons, Dr Joe Brincat and Mr Roderick Galdes, in which they congratulated the incoming Australian Labour Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, for his commitment to the environment, particularly by his pledge to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol.

The Labour spokespersons said that this contrasts sharply with the Nationalist Government’s record since it is doing next to nothing in this regard. They said that, for example, the Nationalist Government itself has done little to lead by example in the area of energy efficiency. Likewise, the Nationalist Government has done little to use cleaner and renewable sources of energy like solar power or other alternative and renewable sources of energy.
