Sporran wearers may need licence (BBC) {protection of fur-bearers}
Kilt wearers could face prosecution if they do not have a licence for their sporran under new legislation which has been introduced in Scotland.

The laws are designed to protect endangered species like badgers and otters, whose fur used to be favoured by sporran makers.

The legislation applies to animals killed after 1994.

Applicants must prove that the animal was killed lawfully before they will be able to get a licence.

The conservation regulations were designed to close a number of loopholes and bring Scotland into line with other EU members.

1. Hmmmm...why not make them out of fake fur, then? Or use the remains of FIDO after he's gone to the
great dogpark in the sky?

The whole process seems a bit well, onerous:

The regulations require anyone who owns any part of a protected animal to obtain a licence.

The maximum penalties for breaking the law are a fine of £5,000 and six months in prison. ...
"Are the police going to take DNA samples from the sporran of every kilted supporter who walks into Hampden?" he asked.

"If that's the case we will need to look into obtaining a licence to cover the entire Tartan Army."

The new rules will also cover fishing flies made from animal hair.

I thought Commander Codpiece used the old rolled up sweatsox trick....!!

3. Scottish Soldiers Forced to Share [320] Kilts
Scottish Soldiers Forced to Share Kilts

More than 5,000 Scottish soldiers are having to share ceremonial kilts because defense chiefs have yet to finalize a contract to buy enough of the garments to go around, military officials said Monday.

The men, who face regular tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, have just 320 kilts between them, or one for every 15 soldiers.

Combat troops wore the traditional Highland skirt in battle as late as World War I, but now the plaid kilts are used as part of ceremonial uniform.

New kilts are needed for all Scottish soldiers following the August merger of centuries-old regiments into a single Royal Regiment of Scotland.

2. Shouldn't it be the maker not the wearer's responsibility?
Unless, of course, the wearer has created his own sporran...

5. Prove a 13yr old Sporran
Prove a 13yr old Sporran was made from a "Lawfully aquired fur" ?
What if the manufacturer is out of buissiness, etc?

Now what they should do is require proof that the Cotton used to make pants was obtained Legally. (It would be terrible if nobody could find an approved pair of pants to wear. }( )

7. Why not protect the habitats and license the makers?
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 09:20 PM by Pigwidgeon
License fees could go to habitat preservation. A set number of the wee beasties would be licensed for a yearly kill to provide the pelts.

Most of the Scots I've known are keen on conservation.
