Tech sector recovers, jobs don't - Commerce Dept.
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3730854/ Tech sector recovers, jobs don't - Commerce Dept.

December 16, 2003 - ....After a punishing slump that saw many firms post huge losses or declare bankruptcy, the high-tech sector is showing signs of recovery as businesses are once again investing in computers and other information technology, the Commerce Department said.

Though high-tech industries make up 8 percent of the gross domestic product, they will account for nearly one-third of the economic growth this year, according to a report prepared by the department's Economics and Statistics Administration.

The picture has not been as bright for workers with high-tech skills, according to the report. Between 2000 and 2002 the sector shed one-third of the 1.8 million jobs it had added since 1993, the report said, and many of those jobs may not be coming back due to increasing automation and "offshoring" of jobs to countries where labor costs are lower.

The average high-tech wage declined 1.3 percent last year to $67,440 even as wages for the private sector as a whole inched up 1 percent to an average of $36,520, the report said.<snip>

1. nice post
wow, "one-third of the 1.8 million jobs" gone. This is a catastrophe. We need to make an example out of a tech company by boycotting them. Who's it going to be? I suggest we boycott the first tech company we A) can confirm is exporting massive amounts of labor and b) advertises on Fox News Network.

2. Stick with just "B"
If you go with "A", you won't be able to do business with pretty much anyone. It'd be easier to name the companies NOT offshoring than the ones that are. Also, this doesn't just affect the Tech sector. Telemarketing, Human Resources, Xray Technicians, pretty much anything that doesn't have to be done on site, people are finding ways to move offshore, a trend that's only going to increase. It's going to be a long and bumpy ride from here.

3. Why does our media bury these stories?
Of course, while we do not have a right wing GOP controlled media - they do act that way.

So protecting Bush's image may mean killing anything that is not a "happy" story.
