The Asymmetrical Smile of W

The face of our 43rd President presents an enigma. At first glance, he appears to be a fairly average looking fellow. But as a caricaturist I can never draw an average face, but the deviations in the face of George W. Bush are disconcerting. Finding a happy medium between freakish distortion and recognizable rendering is not easy with this one.

I notice that many of the professionals draw W with giant ears. His ears are not particularly large, but pointed in an elf like manner. While his dad had a prominent pointed nose, W's nose is flat against his face and pointed downward.

For this drawing, I wanted a pose with him smiling triumphantly. As I studied images of his grin I notice the asymmetry of the edges of his mouth. When he smiles, the right side of his lips pull directly to the side but the left side goes down. He looks as if he's still waiting for the Novocain to wear off.

Finally, name calling aside; there is no denying the simian nature of his face. The flat nose, pointed ears, close-set eyes, his nostrils that can be peered into from across the room, and the fleshy upper lip area all combine to create a slight resemblance to a chimpanzee.

I actually tried to avoid making him look like a monkey, but he is what he is.

2. I see his chin as pretty standard
I notice that a lot of the RNC stuff shoots him from the side with the lighting set just right to magnify the cleft in his chin. He is no Kirk Douglas and this cleft is really just the slightest of impressions.

I will take greater care with the chin in any future W drawings.

3. There's a Psychological Theory about Asymmetrical Smiles
that they reveal two sides of a personality. I don't have a good site now, but it would be interesting to see a picture of Bush composed of two right sides versus two lefts.

>>it would be interesting to see a picture of Bush composed of two right sides versus two lefts<<

I've been curious about this, too, since really everyone's face is a bit asymmetrical -- but W's just seems more so. So I produced the pics you seek, based on a basic portrait shot I googled at http://www.presidentialmarket.org.

The original is a portrait sitting, where Bush is sitting at a slight angle with one shoulder higher. Therefore, in order to avoid unnatural looking stuff (like football-pad shoulders or a scrawny neck) I only mirrored his face and hair, to keep it realistic. So, here we go:

The original:

The right-sided Bush:

The left-sided Bush:

8. Fascinating
I note that the right side GW is much younger looking but this impression may be mostly due to lighting.

Nice job. It looks like three different people.

This official photo doesn't show the true extent of the crooked smile. If you look a one taken of him during one of his shoulder rolling cackles, the smile looks like a thin red angular gash across his face.

>This official photo doesn't show the true extent of the crooked smile.<<

No, you're right. Which I realized partway through, but by then I didn't want to start over. LOL

Anyway, I found a more "lopsided" photo to work with, from http://www.americanphoto.co.jp (the original photo was stamped omniphoto.com, but that got cropped out). This time, I only worked with his face, and didn't even mirror his hair.

I was amazed at the difference! I assure you, I went straight down the bridge of his nose, with no additional touchup except what was required to minimize the mirror-line in a few spots. So now it's ready for any psychological analysis, if there's anything to that. :)

15. Physical reason for asymetrical smiles....
When my daughter saw a pedodontist, he diagnosed her with a crossbite. This where the bite is misaligned from side to side instead of front to back with an overbite/underbite.

He then explained to me that it needed to be correct with a palate expander or she would have an asymetrical smile. He said when you see someone with a crooked smile that is usually the cause because when the bite isn't symetrical the muscles develop unevenly.

Don't know if this is what his problem is (among other things) but I would think he had access to all the best orthodontic services available.

12. There's also a biological theory about asymmetrical smiles
or was it faces? Anyway I very recently saw a new study in a science journal saying there may be a linkage between asymmetrical facial features and toxins in the mothers food and water while the person was in the womb.

I think the picture of the LEFT side of his face is much nicer looking than the other two.

4. Because it's not a smile, it's a smirk.
God he's uglier than sin.

13. Everybody gets uglier with extended study. It isn't what
he looks like that makes him ugly.

10. I am reminded of a photo of Ted Bundy
just after he got the death sentence. He had the same kind of crazed smirk, as if there is some evil force inside that has mastery over the Chimp we know.
