OVER 2000 AT FREEPRESS CONF ON MEDIA REFORM IN SL
<www.freepress.net>

Over 2000 activists/independent media are here in St. Louis, Mo to share, strategize, and act to bring reliable, trustworthy news to the American public. They have gathered here some of the best brainpower and people of action in the country. There are also representatives from several foreign countries. I spoke with a delegation from China who are trying to learn how to set up their news media. What the hey? Several legislators are here along with friendly past and present members of the FCC(They're passing around a button that says, "What the FCC") The excitement and hope here is infectious and will not stop here. These people will head home tomorrow to start the peaceful revolution we so dearly need in this country to protect and nurture our news sources. Take a peek. They have videoed speeches and workshops. This is a kick and a half!!

3. It's all about profit
and cheap, easy news helps the bottom line for them. Remember, it is all about short term gains.

5. *sigh* I wanted to go so badly.
At the last moment, my ride decided she didn't want to go. (Just as well, because I have a lot of work to do.)

6. I attended a couple of workshops this afternoon
and found it interesting. Around 5PM there was a viewing of a documentary called Orwell rolls in his grave or something like that. There was a packed room. It sure was refreshing to be around a bunch of people who understand that it's the media stupid.

Had to miss Al Franken because I rode my bike to the conference and did not want to be out on it late at night.

7. I just got home. I posted a note for fellow DUers on the bulletin
board but failed to hook up with anyone. I would have posted a cell number but I gave up my cell phone.

Someone added to my note that we should add "DUer" to name tags, which I did, but I didn't see anyone else with the same designation. :-( We really need DU buttons when we go to national events like this.

It was hard to choose from among the many workshops. I chose to attend mainly those that offered tactics for activists. The program last night with McChesney, Hightower, Waters, Smith, Franken, Donahue, Copps, and "Blues Man" Adelstein, etc. was fun and inspiring.

Rather than feeling smug about the turnout and the successes shared this weekend, I'm kind of overwhelmed with the reality of the HUGE job ahead to have true reform.

I took some pictures that I'll post later, along with a report.
