Tonight, I watched the local news cover Hillary's concession speech, followed by remarks about the Republican Party convention held today. As Mike Huckabee, the guest speaker, wailed that "the change they preach is not the change we need", the camera panned around the loosely-filled room, and I casually waxed aloud to my partner:
"Look at all the old people." "And the token Hispanic." "There's the fat, white guy."
And I thought -- he is just preaching to the choir. Of course at a convention, that's expected. But it underscored a point that I think we all need to remember through the coming months: to win the election, we need to spend less time here and more time out there.
Now, I want you to know I have a vibe, a shiver deep in my being, a tingle that has often meant I was on the winning team. I believe wholeheartedly that Obama will win. But I don't want this to just be a "win." I want this to be a landslide. A rout. A surge of a single mind, our collective mind, letting forth a magnificent roar that quakes heaven and sends waves of relief around the world. I want to again see us all stand together for strength, without brutality; for justice, without vengeance; for frugality, without misery; for truth, without propaganda.
So, let's get out there. Be positive. Listen, then inform. Speak truthfully and repulse lies. When your feet are weary and your mind is tired, bring your heart to rest here. Remember this place stands as a safe haven for us all: we are kindred here.
