A Democratic Cheney?



Influential Democrats in Washington and in the South are privately talking about former Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia as vice presidential nominee in 2004 no matter who is picked for president.

Nunn, who served 24 years in the Senate ending in 1997, is seen by the increasingly small number of white southern Democrats in Congress as a conservative ballast to any national ticket that might coax Southerners back to their ancestral party.

In addition, Nunn is viewed by his supporters as a Democratic version of Dick Cheney. He is an older hand (now 65 years old) with no presidential ambitions who has strong national security credentials (as Senate Armed Services Committee chairman).

2. Our nominee had better be healthy as a horse

if he picks Nunn. I am ABB and would be no matter what but I vividly remember what a horse's ass he was in 93 and 94 and would be appalled at him being inside the oval office.

I think that Howard Dean should have a Southern moderate on the bottom of his ticket, but I know almost nothing about Nunn. Is he comparable to Blanche Lincoln, John Breaux, or Zell Miller politically?

He did vote against and was highly critical of the Persian Gulf War. Also, he would have become defense secretary if Mondale were elected in 1984. But again, he is much more conservative than a lot of people on this forum. But that's what we're gonna need if someone like Dean is going to get the nomination.

I couldn't stand it if he was the same as Zell Miller, but we do need a moderate Democrat if Dean is the presidential candidate. Nunn wouldn't want to run eight years down the road, so then the 2012 race would already start to emerge between Gov. Rendell, Gov. Blagojevich, Sen. Landrieu, future Gov. Spitzer, Gov. Richardson and Sen. Edwards.

So what! This is probably more of the Dean is McGovern bullshit.
And, anyway, the presidential candidate will pick the vice presidential candidate, not some "Influential Democrats in Washington and in the South."

In light of Dean's Vermont Civil Unions, is the Democratic party going to pick homophobic San Nunn?

He was socially moderate, probably because he had to win in the south. He is a REAL Democrat unlike that Dixiecrat left over who is currently the senior senator from Georgia.

The Dem's should put him at the top of the short list.
