Tips for registering voters?
I'm heading out tomorrow with the intent of spending the next week registering my entire town (it's not a big town, I can walk it in a day). I'm hitting the town clerk first thing to pick up forms; anyone have any tips for a first-time door-to-door democracy salesman? :)

2. Rule # 1
Talk to them for a while. If you're not sure how they're going to vote, don't encourage them! This advice came from a national campaign manager. I know it don't sound right, but you are better off only registering KNOWN supporters.

:)

you might want to check out MoveOn.org. I hear they are starting up a door-to-door voter registration drive, and are specifically targeting swing states.

there are others who are also involved in this...Emily's List and I can't remember who else...

here's an exerpt from the Jan. 5, 2004 In These Times (just on the newstand today)

"About a dozen groups--backed by the likes of EMILY's List, the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, and MoveOn.org--are quietly building an infrastructure to undertake the most extensive door-to-door grassroots voter contact operation in U.S. history. Its potential to turn the election already is well understood on both sides: Longtime activists say they haven't felt this energized in decades---and Republicans are using congressional hearings to shut down the operation or steal directly from its playbook."

..."Cecile Richards, former cheif of staff to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, is director of America Votes, a coalition of 24 progressive organizations that will be coordinating field efforts."

...I just read this today and want to contact them to find out how I can also help with the door-to-door registrations.

As far as ways to register..well...that old southern saying is that you can attract more flies with sugar then with vinegar...I don't know if that works for voters, though. :)

on edit- here's the America Votes web site. I think I'll also post this on GD for those who don't visit this forum often.
