So, Where Is The Peace Movement? - On AfterDowningStreet
Check out the articles with photos just posted on AfterDowningStreet about our weekly peace vigil, still going strong after 7 years - a model for reviving the movement in the era of Obama.

Here's the link to the articles. Honk and Rec!!!

Oh, and here's another page with a great photo: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/49768
Maybe one of you with more DU images posting know-how than I have, can post the photo?)

Excerpts from the articles:

I think we’ve all come to the conclusion that this country has a strong foothold on having perpetual wars until the empire is destroyed or becomes too poor to spend the money for more wars. Personally, I think that Bin Laden ( or the concept of) has managed to destroy us from within.

So what is the good of us freezing our behinds off at the corner every Friday? I’ve questioned that many times and so just don’t show up as it seems superfluous. But then frustration at happening events gives me impetus, and there I am again.
--Carolyne Sorelli

So let us continue to stand on the corner, week in and week out, and bear witness to a country and a world where peace and justice are possible, not because we know we are making a difference, but precisely because we do not know.
--Ross Altman

So maybe the vigils deserve a closer look by those casting about in despair for the answer to the question: Where is the peace movement?

It’s right down the street, friend.
--Steve Fine

1. You've been on DU for over a year, closer to 2, and you are now
educating us?

The wars hopefully are winding down. Sigh.

2. Yeah but 'the peace movement' is forever ...
... much like war itself, not some particular war.

3. "in/out"

Unfortunately I think the peace movement died with John Lennon. And I mean that seriously, I'm hard pressed to think of another figure in mainstream media that was a legitimate force for an all encompassing view of "world peace." Mother Theresa relates to Christians, MLK relates to blacks and civil rights, The Dahlia Lama is to Buddhists; but John Lennon as a member of the counter culture posed as an icon for youth of all walks of life to relate to. Also Lennon differs from the other figures stated in that they practiced nonviolence, but still had ulterior motives; where as Lennon was about Peace as a practiced philosophy.

Until it becomes trendy, mainstream, and somebody legitimizes the philosophy of peace (which has, imo, been cornered into being thought of as naive), peace will be just something we attribute to idealist thirteen year olds that "just don't know what the real world is about."
