Anti-Redistricting Rally in Austin, Texas a Huge Success!
There were more than 5,000 Texas Dems at the rally on 8-9-03 to protest the heavy-handed G.O.P. redistricting effort in the Texas Legislature. This issue has very big national implications. Here's a great photo from the rally:

They also have a good op-ed piece if you scroll down.

If the Texas Dems can just hold on a little longer, thugs like Tom DeLay will get the message that our public won't stand for power-grabbing!

2. Great Picture!
Hope the Texas D's see it and get psyched that they are supported by the people.

4. Texas D's Really are Fired Up!
Edited on Sun Aug-10-03 05:56 PM by Cookiedemocrat
That whole website over there was started by a group of Texas Dems, after their legislators were forced to up and flee to Ardmore, OK. I'm telling you, they are p*ssed off!

Apparently the G.O.P. has now taken the issue to the courts, hoping to force the D's to come back to Austin where they will get Rick Perry's (at the direction of Tom DeLay) redistricting plan rammed down their throats.

The Dems I know in Texas are treating this like it's the damned Alamo!

P.S. Here's their editorial. Good overview of the issue. (I'm not very good at this linking thing.)

6. Good for Texas!
Seemed like since the war was "over", couldn't get groups fired up. Was continually disappointed at the small numbers that protest Bush when he was going around last month. This is just great. Texans show us how it's done!

7. Rally for 'Texas 11' draws up to 5,000
Here's the link to the Austin paper's coverage. I especially appreciated the singers that came out to help us. It was a hot, hot day.

Ely improvised the last line of Guthrie's "Blowing Down This Old Dusty Road" with a line referring to DeLay.

"I'm going where there ain't no DeLay, Lord, and I ain't going to be treated this way."

Thank you all Texans that came out to the rally! Keep up with all the editorial from Texas papers at this site

We win round 1 in the lawsuits fight. Yeah!!

http://www.statesman.com/legislature/content/coxnet/texas/legislature/0803/0811replawsuit.html
The Texas Supreme Court has turned down a request by Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst that the court order 11 Democratic Senators to return to Texas from New Mexico.

Without comment or explanation, the state's highest civil court denied a request for a writ of mandamus, essentially an emergency order from the court that would have declared that the absent senators are violating the state constitution and can be required to return to the Capitol.

Reload and fire again Dems!

11. It's just freaking amazing!
We're talking about a court that is all Republicans. I'll admit I had my doubts on this one. I wouldn't put it past those weasels to play with the rules to get what they ultimately want.

There is some good insight on today's action in this article that ran in the Houston Chronicle on Friday
