1. My dear OmahaBlueDog...
I have read, and have loved, all those books. They speak to the human experience, the human heart, and how we live and love...

Wonderful books!

:hi:

2. I will reluctantly admit to several DU violations in my first experience with Albom
Edited on Sat Nov-26-11 09:32 PM by OmahaBlueDog
We were on a family road trip vacation in a large diesel SUV (violations 1 and 2 -- the SUV and it's dieselness), when we stopped at a Cracker Barrel (violation #3 - probably enough to get me tombstoned right there). That's when we rented the unabridged reading of "Have A Little Faith." There was barely a dry eye in the vehicle by the end (not a DU violation, but note that driving while teary eyed or providing tissue to others is not advisable).

Since then I've read "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" and "For One More Day." I enjoyed them both, but for some reason "For One More Day" and its story of the down-on-his-luck ballplayer spending another day with his mom and recalling his life resonated with me.

Good to hear I'm not alone on this one.

3. No.
Not only do I find his work maudlin, I don't think he's a very good writer. He's marginally better than Nicholas Sparks, another author of saccharin-sweet pablum.

5. I've never read Sparks, so I can't comment
Thanks for being gracious enough not to mention Cracker Barrel.

14. I'm glad that I'm not the only one that feels that way.
I find his work pedantic, and designed (not writtern) with a certain market in mind.

4. I only read "The Five People You Meet in Heaven".

It wasn't what I expected... I was kind of disappointed in the odd collection of characters. And the movie was terrible!

6. I didn't see the end coming.
I figured he'd meet his Dad, or God, or the girl we figured got killed on the ride.

I did not see the movie, but I've heard it was universally panned. I heard the movie version of "For One More Day" is worse.

7. Still waiting for him to write "The Five People Who Will Beat Your Ass in Heaven".

Now, that might be worth reading.

9. That would be fun, and inspirational in it's own way.
Perhaps for Christmas?

12. re: inspirational
Agreed.

It would make you be nicer to people in general, and to step up your training with the nunchucks

8. I loved Tuesdays With Morrie
A friend of mine went to Brandeis and said his class was very popular. I forget what she said you had to do to get into his class--maybe an interview or something like that--because there wasn't enough room in his class for everyone who wanted to take it. She didn't get in.

Someone gave me The Five People You Meet in Heaven but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I have shelves of books I want to read and never get to; I spend too much time reading online.

10. The obvious difference being that one work is fictional.
Some people like "TWM" because they find inspiration in the true story of someone facing certain death. "The Last Lecture" would have similar meaning.

I, too, have a difficult time fitting in time to read the books I've been given.

11. I've only read Morrie.
I liked it, although I thought it was a bit overrated.
Good message. But there's tons of books with basically the same message.
