How do birds procreate?
This question has been bothering me for awhile. At 50, one would think that I 'had seen it all," but that's not the case. I don't live close enough to the major metropolitan areas to pull in the Air America signals, don't own XM (but I will, soon) and dial-up is too slow for streaming. So I find myself with some time on my hands. Some might suggest that it's too much time.

I suppose I could finish my taxes...

2. They have sex, like any other animal,
the female then lays eggs which, depending on the species, either the mother incubates, the father does, or she lays them in another bird's nest to take care of them, or the mother and father share incubation duties.

6. probably only the male
I'm not sure if female birds (or female animals other than humans) ever get to have an orgasm.

21. I think I might have at one time heard that the big cats
do have orgasms. I would like to know how they do the research for this. And if any of you raise your hands "Yes, pick me!" I will actually find you a tiger with whom you may research it.

23. I see no reason why they wouldn't
It just makes sense that evolution would make sex plesurable for females as well as males.

22. Which reminds me of something, and that is this:
Make a cartoon in your imagination. Chicken and Egg, lying in bed. Egg, smoking and half asleep. Chicken, with wings crossed and wearing a scowl. Chicken says the caption "Well I guess everyone knows the answer to that question, now".

"You've got the hen, the chicken and the rooster. The rooster goes with the chicken. So, who's having sex with the hen?"

One of my birdies humps her favorite toy. My late cockatiel used to try to hump ME (Entropy loved her Vince).

you can sing well and have colorful plumage? You would've been a hit in Vegas in the '70s.

I keep parrots and can promise you that birds copulate. Only decency keeps me from posting pictures.

11. most species have internal sex organs
The male usually grasps female by the neck, sort of mounts her, and rubs his cloaca (opening) against her cloaca. His testes are internal, as is her ovary. No external genitalia. They kind of twitch their tails around so the two openings are pressed together. It's usually with the male on top but I have observed some rare copulations where the birds are sort of standing side by side with their butts rubbing -- not sure how to describe this.

A few species, mostly fowl (chickens, ducks) -- the males actually have a tiny penis. But most don't.

I've observed many copulations in many different species and they spend most of their time in courtship, foreplay, whatever you want to call it. The dirty deed is shockingly short.

Snakes now have a doubled-headed penis and can stay locked together for several hours but I have only observed this once (diamondback rattlesnakes).

A dead parrot split in half. Sorry, but the topic reminded me of this rotten joke.

16. i could send you the book
:)

i was at the recycling center recently, there's a shop where folks drop off whatever and you can pick it up, etc.
Usually lots of books. I spotted on on breeding birds, just glanced at it (David Alderton's A Birdkeeper's guide to Breeding Birds) didn't really look at the cover, flipped it to the back and there was an amusing pic of 2 birds on a limb, one hanging upside down from the other....
anyhow, didn't have my 'reading' glasses on, flipped through it, and thought my daughter would enjoy it. We have a pair of cockatiels, and she want's them to breed. It looked, in my fuzzy sight, informative.

took it home, and when she got there and picked it up, started giggling and asked my did i see what was on the cover.
Sure enough, 2 mating budgies, i think....on the photo on the back, well......i think they are considering experimenting.

and i have a video i captured outside my house of 2 redtail hawks doing it. That was a suprise for me. I was videoing one hawk just sitting there when a second landed on the limb beside her...hopped right on, maybe 10 seconds later, he was gone. I was so suprised that i caught it on film...

so, book or video? or both?
