Pink to play Janis Joplin---wtf?!?
file this under: another stupid idea

ranks right up there with Jim Carrey playing Andy Kaufman

-------

On "Unwind" from Pink's Try This, she sings, "I've only been here for 27 years/ But already my life is over."
Pink, who is 24, wrote the first-person song from the perspective of Janis Joplin, the legendary rocker who died in 1970 at 27.
Consider it a preview of her next project. Pink has signed on the play Joplin in a biopic scheduled to shoot this summer, according a spokesperson for director Penelope Spheeris, who has been developing the movie for 15 years.

2. Didn't they already make a movie about her?
"The Rose" with Bette Midler?

5. The Rose was more a remake of "A Star is Born"
Which had been remade already. May have had some "resonance" with Joplin's story, but it was fiction.

Interestingly, the article said another Joplin film was in the works: "Piece of My Heart" starring Rene Zellweger. I could see her as Janis, actually.

I only saw her play once--at Houston's old Music Hall, with Big Brother. She'd played at Sand Mountain Coffee House but had departed for San Francisco by the time I made that scene.

It's too bad she OD'd, but I always preferred Grace Slick.

4. Actually, Jim Carrey was excellent as Andy Kauffman
but I agree on the "WTF" about Pink playing Janis Joplin - that's an insult!

9. Better her than Renee Zellweger, imo
Sorry Renee fans, but I can't stand her, and thought that was a very bad choice when I heard about it. Geeee, I wonder if she's going to gain 15 pounds and be "fat" again to play Janis? Ugh...:puke:

13. Lili Taylor could play Janis. You want an ACTRESS, not a singer...
...It's a MOVIE, not a soundtrack. Pink's the right age and could bring it off looks-wise (maybe) but, I'm sorry, she's not an actress.

14. I actually saw pink last summer
(BTW, she was opening for Lenny Kravitz and they were free tickets from work, so don't judge me too harshly.)

and she did a Joplin cover (I can't remember what it was, maybe "Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart") and she sounded really good. She sounded really close to all the Joplin I have heard (which is admittedly not that much) so as long as she can act, I say cool.

16. Interesting
I wonder if this is the same project Melissa Etheridge was attached to for years. I guess she's getting too old.

I will disagree with those who automatically reject Pink for this role - I think she's really talented and could do it. Believe it or not the only other singer I could imagine would be Courtney Love - she'd be great.
