My father had to go to the hospital for a bad stomach ache
I'm not very religious, but he wouldn't mind, nor would I, if a prayer got sent up for him. He is in pretty good health for a man his age, but I worry about him. He's as stubborn as I am, and doesn't admit it when he's not feeling well until, well, he has to go to the damn hospital.

My mother is concerned, naturally, and is calling me constantly. I hope it's nothing too serious.

7. Thank you
He called me a little while ago on his cell phone, trying to sound strong, like he always does. I love my Daddy. We haven't always gotten along, but he's a great father.

9. Thank you
Mom and I are holding up, and knowing hugs and prayers are going up - I appreciate it. I love my family, and it killed me when my dad called me from the hospital about to get a CAT scan.

I thought those were for heads? He's griping about stomach pain.

11. Nope. CATs are 3D imagers.
They're used on any part of the body. They give fine, detailed pictures of the area.

6. They are having to do a CAT scan
He's in the trauma unit. My heart nearly dropped at that information, but he did call me a few minutes ago. His nurse says "he's sitting up" as though that is as fantastic as can be for a man as hale as my daddy.

Thanks for the prayers and the support.

10. I thought a CAT scan involved the head
is anyone in the medical field able to tell me why they would be doing a CAT scan on a man with stomach pains?

12. I'm not in medicine but I can tell you.
It's a 3d imaging machine. They're probably looking for physical causes, most of which are benign...but once they know the pain cause they can address it.

Common things they might be looking for include stones, intestinal blockages, ulcers, appendicitis, rarely aneurysms. (The last one sounds scarier than it is...they're easily treated as long as they're caught before they rupture. It's one-day/overnight surgery.)

13. Follow up
As said a CAT gives a 3D image. Your father's med team is looking for blockage, tumors (don't panic, a tumor can be and usually is benign), enlarged organ, etc. Anything is better than an invasive procedure.

15. Thanks for the info, and you are right
Anything is better than slicing him open!

I can't help but be worried. My father and I have had a rocky relationship, but when we are good, we are a great team. I love him, and it kills me to see him in pain.

17. CAT scans and good vibes
.
.
.
I had plenty during my hospitalization. It doesn't mean there's anything seriously wrong
with your dad -- it means the doctors are taking HIM seriously. That's a very good thing.
.
.
X-rays, blood tests, physical exams, histories -- they can only reveal so much. A CAT
scan is like the ability to slice the body into a zillion extremely thin slices and then
lay ANY of those slices on a microscope and look for problems.
.
Here's an example of an abdominal "slice" from a CAT scan. Don't let it worry you -- on
the contrary, this tells you that they're checking your dad thoroughly.
.
Vibes to your dad AND you -- and here's hoping he comes home BEAMING with pride and lets
everybody know it was nothing more than a stampede-causing, ER-clearing fart.

19. I hope it's just an ER clearing fart
Knowing my father, it would blow up half of the city, if that were the case. Still, thanks for the well-wishes and reassurances. He's not perfect, but he's a good father, and I would do anything to have him back home watching golf and complaining that the iced tea isn't strong enough.

20. WOOT!
It turned out to be nothing too bad. He's got Diverticulitis and has been eating a shit ton of Grape nuts, rice and cereal.

I have NO problems figuring out what to cook once he gets back home. Thanks to all the prayers, and well wishers. I think you guys helped, and nobody can convince me that those good vibes and prayers didn't :)
