I mixed in some sausage, garlic and pork.

Mixed with pinto bean seasoning, yes.

Now I need to make some ice tea.

1. Make flour tortillas instead!
Just about the same ingredients (plus shortening)

3. I don't have shortening right now.
I will save the recipe and it tomorrow.

There will be plenty of beans left, I made the whole bag.

5. It is 102 right now, so gave up waiting for cooler weather.
I cooked the beans in old cast iron pot that belonged to my Grandmother.

Now all I have to do is turn off the heat and and it cool off a little.

Guests will arrive about 7 PM.

Wouldn't trade it for an equal weight of gold.
Well...maybe.
Lemme thing about that.

9. Biscuits vs cornbread?
In Alabama we'd usually make cornbread with beans.

17. Just a Czech style sausage made with pork and garlic.
My Grandfather had his own smokehouse and made his own.

The first cold front of the season, we were busy making sausage.

I still have the old meat grinder.

7. Yum! My dad sure knew his way around a pot of beans
after all these years, I still haven't been able to get it just right, nor his cornbread that was to die for.

Enjoy those beans and pass down a written recipe to those you love - it will save them years of aggravation.

12. You know, maybe we weren't meant to replicate it exactly
Maybe we're just meant to get so close, and the memories are what's supposed to be treasured and passed on?

16. People ate well back then.
Nothing to fancy but really tasty.

Nothing like a fresh chicken egg either.

Also we had what was called jaw bacon, best breadfest.

19. I think the bacon drippings gave food that extra taste.
I have a jar of bacon drippings, it belonged to my father.

It was his last jar before he died.

I hate to throw it away.
