Get it cold. Get it on ice. Nocal.
You'll forget you liked Diet Coke. BTW, thank you for kicking.

Straight, and mixable w juices too.
Seltzer same thing.
Compare prices; store brands often much better than name brands.

I always have a bottle with me. On the nightstand next to the bed. On the desk at work. In the car. Sure compared to sweet, fizzy drinks it's boring, but at least it won't kill you.

6. I bought a Sodastream and carbonate my own water.
A little pricey at first but man, I've already paid for it in money saved on fizzy water. I mix it with a splash of cranberry juice, lemon, lime or just plain. It's one of the best things we've ever bought!

8. I've drank nothing but water, or on rare occasion, sparkling water
since being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a little over a year ago. It's gotten easier even though I love juice and the occasional root beer float, but a small price to pay for my health. In general it has been easier to make this transition than I thought it would be. Congrats on quitting alcohol. Hopefully the diet cokes will be next . Best wishes to you and i hope some of the posts above have some good ideas. i may try nolabear's idea myself.

I often make it with different flavored teas (lemon, peach, etc). Can't afford the bottled stuff (and would buy it if I could).

An Arnold Palmer is a beverage consisting of half iced tea and half lemonade named for golfer Arnold Palmer.<1><2><3> It is often called a half and half.<4><5>

Store brands are just as good as nationally known brands (and here the difference in price for
two liters is about 78 cents for store brand and 1.50 for known).
.
.
The flavored ones are pretty good (lemon and/or lime oils and such). I learned not to drink on
my motorcycle -- and a fantastic refreshing substitute would be seltzer water with just the
TINIEST splash of Rose's Lime Juice (can be found with the other mixers in grocery stores).
.
.
.
Rose's Lime Juice has sugar... but the splash is so tiny that I bet the calories are in the
single digits.

21. Yes!
There are so many good flavors of selzer -- cranberry, black cherry, lime, lemon, vanilla, raspberry, etc. Polar Selzer has quite a few. The great thing about selzer is that it has zero calories and zero sodium. I used to like to drink a beer in the evenings, but when I drink selzer it takes away my desire for beer, maybe because it seems beer-like to me somehow.

They carry a coconut-flavored seltzer, as well. I've only seen it in 8-packs at Target. It's not bad, and I'm very tempted to try a shot of coconut rum in it one of these days.

29. That's why I got the Sodastream. Seltzer for everybody!!
We got one with glass bottles and it never ceases to be just a little bit of a miracle when I pop that plain old water in there, press a button, and *voila!*

I have managed to convince myself that diet drinks are deadly. I don't like them anyway, but a spoonful of paranoia makes the decision go down quite nicely.

14. I like coffee and I like water.
Most of the time that is all I drink. I know a cup of coffee in the evenings doesn't sound that relaxing but it is for me. I have to say too much carbonation is not healthy for anyone but the ideas presented in this thread are a lot healthier for you than diet soda. That aspartame stuff may be harder for you to quit than you realize, because it is supposed to be extremely addicting. I think for someone who is newly off of alcohol, a LITTLE pop that has sugar in it is probably okay, better for you than fake sugar, but temporarily and not to much, unless you are diabetic. I used to drink many years ago and when I stopped I suddenly just LOVED pepsi. For about six months. Never cared for pop much before or after, but I think I was using it as 'something to drink' instead of alcohol, and that needing 'something to drink' fades a bit later on but I think my enjoying my evening coffee is a permanent carry-over for my substituting one beverage for another.

I tried to become an evening tea drinker instead but I could never make it stick. Tea is just not my thing.

Hang in there, changing habits DOES mean replacing one thing for another, because we all love doing things out of habit. Or, maybe that's just SOME of us.

17. In the summer, lemonade.
I used to make my own, thought homemade would be the best, but I've discovered that Paul Newman's is just as good, without the work. But my favorite is Vichy water, which is carbonated mineral water, and I've discovered that they also sell carbonated flavored lemonades. I like the blueberry. I gave up alcohol 27 months ago. :hi:

18. Fizz water with lime or lemon juice.
Can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners. As a diabetic I need to limit my sugar intake, so it's coffee with just a splash of milk in the mornings, water with lemon or lime the rest of the day. I prefer unsweetened ice tea when I eat out.

24. If you like
Cranberry Juice, you could try this -- buy R.W. Knudsen's "Just Cranberry" juice, dilute it with water (1/4 cup juice to 1 cup water) and sweeten to taste with Stevia, which is a natural sweetener and supposedly does not raise your blood sugar level. The above recipe is about 17 calories per glass. Some people feel that 100% pure Stevia has a bitter aftertaste but I don't mind it. Some of the supermarkets are now offering stevia in a product called Truvia or Purevia but they add something else to it to take away the aftertaste and there is some controversy over that. I like SweetLeaf Stevia and NuNaturals Pure Liquid Clear Stevia (find at Health Food Stores although some groceries carry Sweetleaf), especially the latter because pure powdered Stevia doesn't dissolve as quickly. You can drink this several times a day since it has few calories. I drink it instead of orange juice in the morning, which I will probably never drink again unless it is 100% fresh squeezed after the article I read here last week about how it is made -- ugh!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1605091

Knudsen's makes several types of fruit juices blueberry, pomegranate, cherry, etc. You can mix other ones with the cranberry too if you like to change things up and increase the synergistic antioxidant effect. For example I like cranbery, blueberry and pomegranate, same amount of three juices combined (1/4 cup), mixed with the same ratio of water above. This recipe has slightly more calories about 20 or so per 8 oz.

If you like Iced Tea, you could try making Iced Tea with Stevia too for another no calorie drink.

33. Iced tea, usually.
I quit drinking diet soda when some studies came out about how bad it is for you. The problem with iced tea is that it has caffeine in it, and it also tends to cause frequent visits to the bathroom. So I usually don't drink it late in the evening.

When I am working, however, I have either Iced Tea or Iced Coffee on my desk all day long. I refuse to drink tea that is sweetened, and if I sweeten the coffee I use Splenda.

I just can't do caffeine after a certain point in the day if I want to sleep at night.

First step in the lose weight, get healthier plan. I figured alcohol this month, cigarettes next month, then really hit the diet in October. I've tried doing everything at once, epic FAIL.

I quit diet Coke after 5 pm. I drink coffee in the am, just ice water in the evenings. I never drank water, but after a couple of days, I found that I really enjoy it.
