Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

3. It's a lovely poem, but the problem I have with it is

that whenever I read it I hear this tune in my head:

I've since realized that this is an old joke... but I prefer to believe that
it also actually happened in this case. This Commanding Officer involved
here was reputed to have NOT been amused.

5. I have a similar problem.

When my 6th grade teacher asked us to read it aloud, with each of us kids reading a line, the girl who read, "His house is in the village though" said "through" instead of "though," and that's how I hear it in my head now - "His house is in the village THROUGH." Drives me nuts, but I can't get rid of "through."

6. You think THAT's a problem, let me ruin a few more for you!

Forgive me if I'm preaching to the choir here, but I've always been tickled that the old four-three meter, where you have four beats to a line, then three, then four, etc. (called "common meter") means that you can swap around the tunes of many a song, and all the poems of Emily Dickinson, and a few others. So you can do her poems to "House of the Rising Sun", "Amazing Grace", and the theme from Gilligan's Island. "Because I could not stop for death/It kindly stopped for me" works very well with the GI theme.

Frost is an interesting fellow. Now and then he gets it just right, and now and then I think he clunks. I happen to think this one's lovely. And doesn't that last stanza say it all? Thanks for posting.
