Sometimes it is sheer Hell to wait for news
This is one of those times.

My father's surgery was supposed to be at 9:00 a.m. Still no word. The most recent news I could squeeze out of a hospital volunteer was that his surgery was "delayed" and "he is still in pre-op." That was two hours ago. Do surgeons make patients wait 5 hours, in pre-op, before surgery?

:wtf:

My step-monster will not answer her cell phone. It rings two to four times, then simply disconnects me. I'm telling you, she takes the prize for the worst step-mother in eternity.

1. I hope you hear something soon, sweetie.
And that every thing went successfully. It's very hard being so far away, and with such an obstruction between the two of you in addition to the miles.

Sending him healing vibes.

6. Just in case this is the problem - hospitals generally make you
turn your cell phone off.

7. Some places, but not in the waiting area where she was....
I know, because I spent enough time there last spring.

Anyway. I finally got an update from a volunteer. She wasn't allowed to tell me much... just that he got through surgery ok. Whew! I am so relieved.

And, btw, step-monster never did answer her phone... or return my messages.

Keep us informed when you hear something, okay? Okay, I just read your last post. I'm sorry about the step monster.

15. Thanks mwdem
Never did get to speak w/him tonight. Nobody answered in his room. But my sister (the one who is a nurse) reassured me that is not unusual with surgery late in the day... that he was probably sleeping.

It's very difficult not being there.

12. Best thoughts to your father!
Hope you have good news soon.

Could it be that the mobile phone doesn't work in the hospital?

All I heard, from one of the volunteers, is that he pulled through surgery.

My 'step-monster' never called me back (nor my sisters).

Hopefully, he will be able to pick up the phone in his hospital room tomorrow.

21. there probably isn't much more to tell you than he got through it OK
I was AT the hospital less than 2 weeks ago when husband had a major surgery - the surgeon came and talked to me but then the receptionist in the waiting area forgot to tell me when they moved him out of recovery and into his room:eyes:

still didn't really know how he was for two or three days, even sitting in there with him, healing from that kind of stuff just takes time

24. Surgical schedules seem to get messed up most of the time.
Sigh. Seems like the heart and thorax docs are the absolute worst ones about that, too. My mom had a quad bypass back in May, and her surgery was supposed to start at 10 am. Her doc ran into issues with the case ahead of her and they never got her into surgery until something like 7 that night. Her surgeon looked about done in by the time he got done with her at about 10.

Glad to hear your dad came through it ok. You gotta figure that those hours after surgery are pretty sleepy ones for the patient. Not only are they sleeping off the anesthetic, but they are also probably getting some pain meads as well by that point. Hopefully you'll be able to talk to him tomorrow.

Something that you guys might want to consider, is that your Dad can tell the hospital that it is ok to talk to his kids about his condition. If they have his permission, they can tell you what is happening, and you can even call the nurse's station to check on how he's doing. You might bring it up to him that (Step mom) might appreciate it if you kids could talk to the hospital directly rather than her needing to call you all with information when she's so worried about him... (Sounds a lot better than saying, "she refuses to call me and I am stressed out because I think she's a monster that is deliberately withholding information...)

Hang in there. It is difficult to be so far away when you are worried.
