3. You think that's so great???
I changed the switch thingamajig in my floor lamp all by myself - 3 times in 10 years. Now THAT is consistently clever. :)

8. But of course!
Works just fine & dandy. I'm sure it was some luck thrown in with all my cleverness, though. :)

7. I replaced the part of a lamp
That you screw the bulb into about a half dozen times patting myself on the back for saving my favorite lamp. Suddenly, a light bulb went off in my head and I realized I was using too high a wattage bulb in the lamp and that was why the part kept going bad.

Not to take away from your cleverness but if it one of those lamps where the light shines from a cone like fixture rather than being open to the air on both ends it may be a heat build up problem. :)

9. Well, that IS the part I replaced
but it was the switch, the little black thing you turn it on & off with, that quit working. It just went 'round & 'round without "clicking." So, I think that's a different problem, don't you?

12. On mine
The little black thing stopped turning. If you looked inside you could see char where the bottom of the bulb should touch the contacts.

My two lamps are small spotlights that you can shine on close work. I think they were made for people that do needlework. I've not found anything like them in stores except those cheap little metal lamps that kids use in college dorms. Mine are metal but heavy freestanding and have goosenecks.

Anyway they came with 50w reflector bulbs which were hard to find. Only big places like Home Depot had them. So over time I began just using 75w regular bulbs and hence my problem. When I left them on for several hours eventually they stopped working. The reflector bulbs are actually lower wattage and direct the heat forward so they are necessary for my lamp. Now I can get them in the supermarket or an hardware store. :)

13. Ya know,
I think that may be my problem. I use 100 watt, since it's the only lamp in my living room. I guess I'm gonna have to cede my cleverness to you. Damn. :P

14. I'm not that clever
It took me about 10 years to figure it out. I'm way too familiar with the electrical/lighting section of my hardware store. I could find one of those thingamajogs with my eyes closed because I replaced them so often. :(

I think most lamps have a sticker on them telling you the highest recommended wattage. It might be worth a look. I only remember mine because the bulbs were so unusual and only came in one wattage back then.

16. Yes, cone-shaded lamps, or those that don't allow heat to rise & dissipate
should have 60 watt or lower bulbs.

I have a little old tensor® lamp that uses small, clear bulbs. It has two different brightness settings, and blinks on and off when too much heat builds up.

17. That warning light sounds neat!
Yes, I was too clever by half. The part I was replacing was rated to 250w so I thought I was in the right. I didn't take into account the design of the lamp. Now I know better. Live and learn and then die anyway. :P
