Christ, someone pick a fight already!!
I'm falling asleep reading these damn thread titles. What are you all, a bunch of boring-ass breast-feeding old women hanging out at Olive Garden while organizing protests against putting Rush in the Hall of Fame??? Butt Cracks? Really?? That's the best we can do????

The Lounge today must be directed by Peter Jackson.

30. d'oh!
It's a hot mess. A thread about a TX mayor murder suicide gets locked because the subject line is something along the lines of "this is why I hate TX". Then someone else starts another thread about the same news story (the thread I linked to) but does so in a way that doesn't bash TX so the then the poster of the locked thread has words with the poster of the new thread because...well I'm still not sure...something about continuing a locked thread even though it was approached in a different way. All I know is that a few people have alerted on it, and now at least one Texan is there to defend the honor of Texans everywhere, but you're not there! YOU ARE FORGETTING THE ALAMO JOBYCOM! In the LOTR. Oh and most professional critics agree with me, along with most knowledgeable people in Hollywood since last I recall Return of the King was drowning in Oscars.
When did minority personal opinion become the equivalent of facts? I missed that meme...:eyes:

37. Kinda hard to think it's the greatest trilogy ever when it SUCKS.
As for when minority opinion became fact, this is the Lounge. People here constantly bash anything the sells, is awarded, has been heard of by other people, or is in any way entertaining to anyone. Start a thread on "Popular movies that suck" and you'll get a list of the last 30 Oscar winners and the most beloved films of all time, stated as fact. Look at "Titanic," for chrissakes. The most awarded and best selling film ever, and I'll bet you'll get a dozen mentions of it.

Peter Jackson won three Oscars, mostly because of the scope of the project, in a slow year. The movie won eleven, mostly in technical categories--music, makeup, set, visual effects. It won director and picture of the year because of its technical complexity, and the fact that it was competing with films like "Lost in Translation" and "Master and Commander" and Seabiscuit. Oh, and Mystic River.

It was a bloated film with no discernable narrative that picked scenes almost at random from the books rather than telling a story. It was formulaic in style, melodramatic, and internally inconsistent. It had good actors and pretty effects, but the directing was juvenile. I'd have given it an Oscar for producer, if they awarded one, because it was a grand production that pulled together a lot of technical elements, but in that it was like a Chris Columbus film--all technical merit, not life or originality. Pretty words don't make a poem.

Opinions, fact, whatever. It was torture to watch, and only the fact that it was Tolkein made anyone like it. As with everything else Jackson does, the main things that almost worked came from the original source, not from Jackson. He's a lousy director, even if he's a decent producer.

41. Actually most people think that Return of the King
won all the Oscars that The Two Towers and Fellowship of the Rings deserved.....And I still don't know how you can call it "bloated" when it is extremely faithful to the books...with maybe leaving OUT some stuff. And I KNOW you like the books. You are the only person I know that while liking the books, didn't like the movie....
And yeah, I hate that popular=Shit attitude around here. I loved Titanic, thought it was visually beautiful and just overall a joy to watch even if the plot was a little formulaic.
But I do hate the "I don't like it and so I'm going to look down my nose at anyone else who doesn't share my OPINION" attitude around here...There is too much elitist attitude in that for me.

BTW, I'll be sure to PM you may rave review of seeing Rush in concert in September..

46. Yeah, I hate that attitude, too
Really, my whole "Rush sucks" routine started because a couple of posters who think they are iconoclasts kept trashing everything I liked but defending Rush. I think I've mentioned that while I don't really like Rush (and outright hate a couple of their songs), I really don't think they are THAT bad. :) I get why others like them, I just don't like them.

But I really hated RotK. I mean, I literally felt like I was trapped and in pain during that movie. The Frodo-dangling-from-the-eagle-over-lava scene made me cry in agony. The Two Towers I thought was okay, mostly because of Ian McKellan (who was fantastic even if the movie killed me).

It wasn't faithful to the book. It took random scenes from the book, but strung them together in ways that left gaps in the story. Tolkein's work was perfectly plotted, with even minor scenes and character interactions being critical to later events. But I don't compare movies to books like that--it wasn't because I thought the movie cheated the books that I was upset. If the movie had worked on its own, I'd have loved it. But the directing was just too horrendous. I'm having spasms now trying to choke back long tirades of profanity-laced invectives about it.

And I know a lot of people who loved the books and hated the movies. We meet in dark cellars with only candles for light, in case we are being spied on, and we rewatch the old cartoon, which at least told a story and had some dramatic merit instead of just stringing together cinematic cliche after cinematic cliche. I'm kidding about the meetings. But not about the cartoon.

Okay, I'll stop. And I didn't curse. That's more self restraint than I'm used to showing.

47. Faithful to the books? Are you fucking kidding me?
You need to read them again, hon.

The worst was the portrayal of Gimli - he wasn't a joke character, and there were certainly no lame-ass SCA clown dwarf-tossing jokes - he was actually dignified. Legolas wasn't just eye candy with random bad CGI sight gags, either - they had a relationship, based on mutual overcoming of racism, and it had poignancy. Peter Jackson butchered all that.

The point where the movie trilogy lost me was when Frodo - who was somehow in Osgiliath, despite it not being in the books at all, but Peter Jackson just had to put them there so he could do a bad remake of a shot from Saving Private Ryan - FRODO SHOWS THE RING TO THE NAZGUL. Sure, it was a pretty shot, but if you know anyfuckingthing about the universe of the books, you know that would have been his ass, right there. Epic, epic, epic fail.

And ROTK, my gods. They actually fucked up the best scene in the entire trilogy! When Eowyn takes off her helm, yeah, it's fine if she doesn't give the speech, but for fuck's sake, they could have given the Witch-King a few seconds of reaction before she shanks his ass. FAIL. And since they had time for a long, boring denouement, they certainly had time for the Scouring of the Shire, but nooooo. No coming of age for the Hobbits, which was kind of the ENTIRE FUCKING POINT of the books.

And they underutilized Saruman, and they utterly botched the confrontation between Gandalf and the Witch-King, and it was all because Peter Jackson is a fucking HACK of vast proportions. And now all these chuckleheads who haven't read the books since 1965 have a nice warm nostalgic glow, but that doesn't change the FACT that the books were mutilated for the adaptation in totally unnecessary ways. If you want to see it done right, check out the BBC radio plays with Ian Holm as Frodo. They leave stuff out, but don't alter the source material, unlike Peter Jackson, who is a hack of such vast proportions that he makes George Fucking Lucas look respectable in comparison!

48. ZOMG THEY DIDN'T PUT EVERYSINGLE WORD IN EXACTLY THE SAME
as the books. We all know that EVERY adaptation ever made is EXACT TO THE WORD...Jeezus fucking christ. I liked the fact that some of the really boring parts of the books (and there are some, I'm not the only person who was put off by some Moby Dick like non- essential details that weighed down the books). I had a hard time reading FOTR for a long time because the first couple of hundred pages are non-necessary to the plot overkill.
And yes, it was faithful to the books..that doesn't mean exactly like the books. And some literary critics I read all praised the movies as capturing the essence. Stop being FANGIRL and start learn to evaluate things objectively. Your opinion is your opinion-face the fact that your opinion is not shared by people who know literature and movies as a professional.
BTW, first you complain they are too long and then you complain that there wasn't ENOUGH in them. Can't have it both ways. And no movie can contain every single conversation
I disagree totally on your "character analysis" of Gimli-adding humor to his character is not "disrespecting" his character AT ALL. BTW, my mother, the English teacher taught me literary analysis so I think I have SOME credibility in my literary interpretation...I liked the LOTR books but I think that Jackson actually improved on some of the FLAWS that were in the book. The fact that alot of people who didn't like the books liked the movies is also a PLUS. A badly directed movie would have alienated every one who was NOT a fan. Therefore your analysis really is a reflection of your own personal biases and fannishness in my opinion. But what do I know, HUNDREDS of positive critiques in the industry can't POSSIBLY be right...

51. You didn't even read my fucking post, did you?
No, you just erected a strawfangirl because you can't handle my critique of your idol made of crap. Well, tough shit.

Like I fucking said, there is plenty of material in the books to draw from without pulling extraneous elements out of Peter Jackson's ass. And yes, I can have it both ways - if the movies are going to be that fucking long, they could have used more cool stuff from the books instead of, say, a 20-minute recap of everything we've just fucking seen while Elrond and Galadriel stare moodily into the camera. Or that stupid Ghostbusters bullshit they did instead of conveying the true horror of the Paths of the Dead. LAME!

And nice try, but you know good and goddamn well there is no such fucking thing as objectivity when it comes to art. Yet you dare to give me shit because I actually read the books? That means I have the capacity to actually compare the films to the source material, why should I give a fuck about troglodytes who didn't bother reading it? They can enjoy the movies all they want to, the movies are still utter fucking dreck.

(Oh, I know I'm supposed to add a fucking disclaimer that this is my opinion...but my tolerance for stupidity wears thin. Deal.)
