What are good reasons for NOT buying an iPod. I want to have one.
I came into unexpected money, and after spending a lot of it on responsible stuff, I want a new toy.

iPods are pretty cool, but do I really need one? Isn't it just another way of being chained to the Internet?

What say you?

1. Actually you don't have to be chained to the net with it,
You can simply transfer your CD collection on to it, which is what I'm doing with mine. It also works well in the classroom, if you teach. I've used it to bring in videos and audio stuff for my students, rather cool.

I'm not a big fan of earphones, buds, etc because they generally wind up damaging your hearing over the long run, so went out and go myself a boom box with an Ipod dock, really nice not to be having to constantly change CD's during the day. Next car is going to have an Ipod dock as well, no changing discs on long trips.

2. iTunes?
I like my 80GB iPod, but I just can't get myself to like iTunes (the software; I've never used the store).
Also the fact that you have to use a workaround to get an artist's albums to display in chronological order.
How's that? :)

12. Good to see you too!
I had a lot of trouble with iTunes in the beginning, because I was used to Creative's software, which was much simpler and more open (you could manipulate files directly on the player). It bugged me then, and I still don't like iTunes...

10. It's great, I hooked everyone with an iPhone, iPod, iPad up on it.
Works with gloves and long fingernails. Very easy to use the little keyboard and great for doodling. And the best thing is, you don't always clean your iPod because of all the fingerprints. It stays clean. :)

5. You don't need one.
You WANT a new plaything. That's why it's called a toy, silly.:P
If you can afford to buy a toy after doing all the responsible stuff, what are you waiting for?

9. I bought my first iPod so I would have music on some flights to CA
I had the initial time consuming task of ripping all of my CDs, but once that was done, the CDs were boxed up saving space and I was able to listen my music anywhere, and have all of it with me, without lugging hundreds of pounds of CDs and boxes. Oh, wait, I'm trying to convince you that you don't want one.

OK, how about this, when I bought my first iPod, I liked it, nay, I loved it. So much, that when it came time to replace my aging (built by me) Windows machine, I didn't build a new computer, but bought a PowerMac G5 tower. When my iPod got damaged, I had to replace it with a new iPod. When Apple TV was released, I bought the first one available at the Bridgewater, NJ store. When my PowerMac was getting long in the tooth, I replaced that with a Mac Pro (Early 2008 model). When I found that I could use the iPod Touch to control not only iTunes, but my Apple TV and my TiVo, I bought one of those.

My initial iPod experience was so good that I've become an Apple user and have spent over six thousand dollars on other Apple gear since then. That should scare you away :D

14. I concur that iPods are awesome, but iTunes sucks, and Apple is a control freak
when it comes to using what you buy at the iTunes store, so I would stay away from there.

23. As far as music goes, there are no restrictions, it's all DRM free now
The same can't be said for movies and TV shows, but that's the case with any downloaded/streaming movies that are legally obtained.

15. Podcasts
Edited on Fri Jul-16-10 02:32 PM by LSK
You can get free podcasts of many documentaries and shows such as Real Time with Bill Maher.

I cant think of a reason not to get an IPod unless you like hauling a crate of CDs around???

16. iTunes is fine
although alternatives exist. I like the "Genius" function on iTunes, and am rating all my 13,000+ songs, which you can't do on some alternatives.

Don't buy music from the iTunes store, buy it from Amazon. Amazon sells mp3s, which are more flexible.

I've only used iPod Nanos, which I dearly love. I've never moved up to the big iPods, so can't speak to those.

Zen makes some alternatives to the iPod that are considered quite good, too.

21. I LOVE my iPod
I have an iPod Classic, which means I can download tv shows and movies on it. It's great to use when I fly and I love linking my iPod to the car stereo so I can listen to my favorite music and podcasts when I travel.

If my iPod Classic broke, I'd buy a new one before the day was over :)
