Showing affection does not include probing one's partner's tonsils with one's tongue in public. Still, there are differences. What might be considered really unacceptable at a restaurant at 9 p.m. (don't really feel like making polite dinner conversation while someone at the next table is close to reaching orgasm), might not be quite so unacceptable at a night club at 2 a.m.
