I watch it at home.

Maybe I go with a friend and watch one of the finals at one of the public viewing areas. There is one right next to my work place.

Even so, ABC only comes in half the time.

I prefer to hear it in Spanish. The English-language (especially American) announcers are DULLsville.

Let the host nation celebrate they way they want. Part of the World Cup is about merging cultures, and to tell South Africa that they can host the event, but only if they do it the exact same way as Europe seems kind of shitty to me.

234. You know what I'd really like to see?
An underdog country coming along, kicking ass and go home with the trophy. I cheered for Cameroon a few world cups ago... there was so much passion in their game!

I was born and raised in soccer country (Germany!), but from what I've seen so far, the "big" soccer nations are performing la-de-dah at best. I don't care just *who* takes the trophy... but please let it be a team that's not so smug that it feels a certain sense of entitlement.

OMG, let's wait and see what happens out there, friend!

Love seeing het Oranje get the win. It wasn't their usual standard of play, but Denmark did a good job closing space and preventing a break in the final 1/3. I'll bank that the Netherlands will be much sharper against Japan and Cameroon.

And I realized that I am pissed off AS AN AMERICAN ON BEHALF OF MY COUNTRY, WHICH I BELIEVE WAS SINCERELY WRONGED.

I can't remember the last time I ever felt that. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever felt it before. There might have been some incident in the Olympics once but I can't remember the details.

Is this how teabaggers feel all the time? Not that I care, it's just such an odd, unfamiliar feeling.

230. England has been playing WAY too tight...
Expectations have been sky high after breezing through qualification, and the price of failure is in the back of their minds....This cautious "playing not to lose" style is making it that much worse...

England has to get back into 'childhood fun' mode and get back to basics...Better to go down guns blazing than another 0-0 draw...

England's best chance in the last group game might be to go a goal or two down early on which might allow them to play with a bit more freedom, knowing that they've nothing left to lose.

but it was exciting to watch two teams go full-throttle for 90 minutes as if their lives depended on it...Something for the USA and England to take note of, maybe??

Remaining group games where you can expect one or both teams to sell out completely:

20 June -- Slovakia v. Paraguay, Italia v. New Zealand, Brasil v. Cote d'Ivorie

21 June -- Portugal v. North Korea, Chile v. Suisse (Chile will not want to play a desperate Espana with advancement on the line)

22 June -- Greece v. Argentina (Greece will need this one, and Argentina may want to coast

23 June -- Slovenia v. England, USA v. Algeria (some team in this group has to wake up sooner or later, right??) and Ghana v. Alemanha

24 June -- Danmark v. Nippon (this could be a very fun one to watch) and possibly Italy v. Slovakia

25 June -- Portugal v. Brasil (this week's "Game of the Century" is a must-watch even if there is nothing at stake) and maybe Chile v. Spain

307. If that score stays, and Spain then beats Chile 1-0...
...both will have identical campaigns, and Spain will edge out Chile by the direct-confrontation rule. BUT...

Chile may still qualify if Switzerland doesn't beat Honduras. BUT, if Switzerland then beats Honduras 1-0, it will have an identical campaign to the other two. But they beat Spain, who beat Chile, who beat Switzerland...

And then LOTS ARE DRAWN to determine who's first, who's second, and who goes home. Lovely.

309. Two teams have identical campaigns, but in the match between the two, one beat the other.
The one that won the match advances.

Might happen if both Spain vs. Honduras and Spain vs. Chile end 1-0 -- Spain and Chile will each have two 1-0 wins and one 0-1 loss, but Spain beat Chile so it advances.

and they had a few shots on goal--including one cannon shot from almost midfield that bounced off the crossbar. Mexico should be winning.

Then Veron follows up with a cannon, and another good save. This Greek goalie might get a workout today.

, another great save by the Greek keeper, and Messi is denied yet again.

Uncharacteristically sloppy passing by Argentina in this half.

462. and Japan wins 3-1 and also advances
Two Asian (Japan & South Korea) and two North American teams (US & Mexico), but only one African team in the Round of 16.

US, Japan and South Korea all have a decent shot at making the quarterfinals (maybe not favorites, but a win by any would not be a shocker). Mexico needs a miracle to beat Argentina, though.

Great game! Scoreless draw.

Brazil had the offensive edge, but the performance of the Portuguese goalie Eduardo was phenomenal, standing on his head (ice hockey metaphor) during the entire game. Brazil almost had it in stoppage time if it weren't for Eduardo's acrobatic save.
