E. Bridgewater partiers wreak havoc, cause $45K in damage
March 24, 2010 05:31 PM
By Milton J. Valencia, Globe Staff

EAST BRIDGEWATER -- A mother’s dream vacation in Paris turned into a nightmare last month when she returned to find her son’s classmates had crashed a party at her home and run amok, causing damage estimated by police at more than $45,000.

Walls and ceilings were punched through, computers were stolen, and blood and urine soiled the floor and closets.

“They destroyed everything, basically destroyed our lives,” Jill Steidle said today.

<snip>

Steidle is calling on school officials and the community to do more to punish four students who, she says, have continued to harass her family, calling her son a snitch, setting up Facebook pages mocking the destruction, and refusing to acknowledge any role in the incident. One Facebook page, according to court records, was called the “Homewrecker Crew.”

<snip>

According to court records, Steidle's son was staying with friends and relatives and went home to take out the cat when revelers started showing up. He asked them to leave, but they would not listen. He did not call police because he feared he would get beat up. And from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., more people started showing up.

<snip>

The teenager acknowledged that the party careened out of control. He said he felt bad for the mother and the family, but said he had always been friendly with the son and that the party had been planned. He said two other parties were held there that week.

You should've been there. What they did to that kangaroo just wasn't right.

4. As horrible as this situation is, Steidle's demands are ridiculous
Steidle said she was shocked to hear that even after the students were arrested they were allowed to attend East Bridgewater High School with her son. She has called for them to be suspended, and said they should not be able to attend the school graduation.

"They don’t deserve it,” she said.

This didn't happen on school property, the school has absolutely no sway here.

5. I agree completely.
It's a legal matter, not a school one.

6. Unless they're harassing her son on school property for "snitching."
Or if they can show that some of the "Home Wrecker" facebook entries were made from school computers in their computer lab or library.

8. I agree
but there was a story on NPR not too long ago about some school districts doing exactly that, stepping in and punishing the kids at school for things they were doing outside of school.

That is such utter bullshit. This is for the parents and the law to handle, not the school.

10. Another question, why didn't Junion Steidle call the police when things went awry?
I don't think he's all that innocent in this mess.

12. Some of the accused say the kid had planned the party weeks in advance.
In any case, "If Woody had gone straight to the police, none of this would have happened."

14. Yeah, he couldn't duck into the bathroom & call 9/11?
I'm supposed to believe that this kid has no cell phone? If the party was planned, Junior was in on it.

17. Who lets a cat out in the evening?
We let ours out in the morning and bring her in a night - do we have it backward?

It sounds like this town (parents, police, and school) has treated a bunch of spoiled kids with kid gloves for far too long...

19. These might be the stupidest parents on the planet.
Do they really beleive the party just kinda happened? That their son didn't throw it?

Please. You don't leave a teenager home alone for that long.

20. Pikers. A few years ago, some local kids broke into a house and did over $100,000 in damage.
While the neighbors were away on vacation, they broke in, threw the Mother Of All Parties, and went medieval on the house.

This does not excuse in the SLIGHTEST the eventual behavior, but that kid
knew about and was involved in planning that party... armed with the
fore-knowledge that your parents were going to be on a trip to Europe,
what red-blooded fun-loving high school kid would NOT go all medieval
"Risky Business" on their asses?

23. At least they had a house to come home to.
Back when I was in high school, a couple of parents went away on vacation and left their TWO teenage sons home alone. I wasn't there, but from what I heard the party was a blast...until someone thought it would be funny to pack the fireplace full of stuff and start an indoor bonfire.

There wasn't much left of the house after the fire department put it out.

32. don't they have homeowner's insurance?
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 04:06 PM by pitohui
how does this "basically ruin our lives?" several of the vandals have been charged w. the destruction of property, take the police report, have a word w. yr home insurance, and get yr house fixed -- you don't have to wait for years for this to wind thru the courts, let state farm or whoever worry about litigating the vandal's families to get the $ back

what's the issue here? aren't you covered for at least $100K when teen-age vandals attack yr home?

i had a similar amt of damage caused by a tropical storm, it was a PITA but my life wasn't ruined, within a few months i was able to collect everything but a $500 deductible to repair the damage
