Who has ever done a background check on someone?

Did you use an online service?
One that you would recommend?

1. Accurint is good (commercial form of LexisNexis) but you might need a professional with a license
do not use ussearch or any other of the internet based searches. they are only peddling info that is available for free online.

I used to be a PI so feel free to let me know if you need any other help.

2. What sort of things does a background check tell?

I've thought about having them done, but never have.

3. there are differing levels
you can usually find a current (or very recent) address, criminal history (which is public and free is you know where to look), property records (also free if you know where to look), marriages (free), divorces, and so on. Most of the pay web sites only package a lot of useless free info and charge you for the presentation.

What information are you trying to learn about someone?

If you are just trying to make sure your babysitter doesnt have a criminal record, you can have them sign a waiver or take their name, address, and dob to the local police department and they should tell you IF they have a record.

...now a government background check (or a professionally conducted one) will typically go back 3 to 10 years and interview coworkers, former neighbors, teachers...... (I cut my teeth doing security clearances for the Man)

4. I don't need one just now but have thought of having one done

on a potential S-O--this is hypothetical. Especially credit check.

5. it's illegal to obain financial info without a signed credit release waiver
anyone who says they can get you a credit check is doing something illegal and will be flagged by most of the credit bureaus and reported to the individual whose credit was checked.

13. Where are the best free places to look?
There are so many pay sites out there like USSearch, Intellius. I'd like to know a good free resource.

7. Back when I was dating.I used to search court records
to find out what my dates have been in trouble for in the past. It worked and it was free! Kind of un-fair though because even if you were acquitted or found not guilty the record is still there.

My Mother has a friend who does background checks as a living and she did a free one on the guy who stabbed me. Got his disposition and everything.

Speaking of disposition, who gets this information? Do the cops keep a file on you?

12. My wife is a federal officer..
Early in our relationship I broke up with her after a few months of dating. She was pissed and ran a thorough N.C.I.C background check.
She apologized after she told me about it when got back together. I was surprised it took her that long.
