Went for a hike today-Providence Canyon SP, GA
Very pretty area, and now the wisteria and dogwood is starting to come out. Too nice to stay inside.
Providence Canyon is an actual canyon, formed from erosion due to overlogging. The rock there is very loose sandstone, which eroded quickly, and in the space of 100 years or so carved out a canyon 150 feet deep, with raw rock/sand walls. Far prettier than I would have expected. There's a little running water in the bottom, and some areas of shallow quicksand (nothing over ankle deep). Saw a great deal of evidence of wildlife-deer, possoms, raccoon, and the most surprising thing:freshwater mussels! Very weird, given that the water is nowhere over 1 inch deep.
It was a great hike for a Sunday.
