The Taylor, Tx Rattlesnake Roundup is in 2 weeks.

I live about a block from where they have it. They have an arts and crafts show where you can buy every thing you could possibly imagine that can be made out of snakes. Wallets, purses, rattle earrings, and almost everything else. They sell snake meat if you want to eat some. It is breaded in corn meal and fried. It tastes like chicken. It is okay. I don't do backflips over it though.

They have paramedcs there because usually someone gets bit later in the day as the beer starts to flow. My sister and her family are coming to see it. I guess it is big shit for yankees to see hundreds of live rattlesnakes in a pit and a couple of idiots walking around in there and picking them up.

We are the minority here by far.

But every year here in Taylor Tx the Jaycees put this show on. They have contests with teams that pick up 10 rattlesnakes and put them in a burlap bag and whoever does it the quickest is the winner. It's a lot of fun and it is something you don't get to see all the time. There are usually PETA people there protesting at the entrance. I've killed a rattlesnake and a copperhead on my deer land. We are overrun with them down here in the rural areas.

8. I'm not much of an animal rights activist....
except when it comes to wild animals. I understand thousands of rattlesnakes
are captured for those things, virtually all of which end up dead one way or
another. Animal slaughter as entertainment.

Rattlesnake roundups started long ago as a way to control what was then a
genuine menace. Now the menace is human to snake.

9. Read Harry Crews' "A Feast of Snakes"...
a brilliant novel about a fictional rattlesnake roundup that takes place in Mystic, GA. Modern southern gothicism at its best.
