Marvin Gaye "What's Going on" - Greatest Soul Album of all time?
I say yes

The bassline in "Make me wanna holler", the flow of side 1 - this is music that will make you cry

1. It is one of my all-time favorites
and the lyrics still speak true today.

"In 1969 or 1970, I began to re-evaluate my whole concept of what I wanted my music to say... I was very much affected by letters my brother was sending me from Vietnam, as well as the social situation here at home. I realized that I had to put my own fantasies behind me if I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world" - Marvin Gaye

Who knew that the purveyor of the finest beggin'-pleadin' love songs had this in him?

father.

8. Al Green is good. Stevie's good. But this album, my friend, is amazing.
It's the whole, that is greater than the sum of its parts.

10. During that period
Marvin did a shitload of concerts, and they were, note for note of "What's Going On" in the same order as the album. Probably saw or backed twenty shows in the southwest back then. Each was an individually beautiful experience, like Marvin.

It was cool. I lived in Marvin's House shortly after his death; my partners and I had purchased it from him during his losing my mind phase. He moved back in with his dad and was dead like two months later. It was kind of weird about Marvin; many fans had heard that he buried money in his yard and many was the time we would get home and see someone running off with a shovel, and a fresh hole in the lawn.

13. I would agree...
Curtis Mayfield, Temptations, Isaac Hayes, Al Green...all great. But Marvin rules.

25. When the song "Make Me Wanna Holler" first came out, I misheard
the line "Make me wanna holler, throw up both my hands" as "make me wanna holler, throw up on my hands." It was quite some time before I found out what the lyrics really were.
