What city/state are you living in ?
And if you know it ha ha , what is the "motto."

Me, Columbia South Carolina

Motto: "Columbia, it's a capital place to be."

How ridiculous is that?

I'm currently a sophomore at NDSU. I'm from Fargo originally, lived in Mpls. for 11 years, went back to Fargo last year for college. I tranferred from tech school in the north Mpls. suburbs. I'm studying architecture here right now. I'm on the Bison football team too.

17. Some are just weird
I used to live near a small Alberta town called Tofield. It's motto? posted at each end of town on large sign.
"COME SHARE OUR VIEWPOINT"
which I found alternately fatuous or threatening.

Then there's Biggar Saskatchewan

WELCOME TO BIGGAR
POPULATION: 998,850
less than Winnipeg
New York is Big
But this is BIGGAR

Then there are the towns that will do anything to set themselves apart. I have seen and photographed the following, all in Alberta.
Unfortunately the photos aren't easily accessible or I would post photos.

Redwater: World's largest oil drilling rig

St. Paul: World's first UFO landing pad. The tourism info booth next door is a flying saucer.

Vilna, Pop. 290: World's largest mushrooms. Steel mushroom cluster 30 feet high.

Andrew, Pop. 550: World's largest Mallard duck. A steel duck with a wingspan of about 60 feet. It is on a pylon and appears to be strafing Main St.

Torrington, Pop. 600: An entire museum dedicated to western "culture" expressed by hundreds of stuffed and costumed gophers (actually Richardson Ground Squirrels), really extraordinarily creepy.

Glendon, Pop. 700: World's largest Pyrogi (Ukrainian dumplings) a fork about 50 feet tall with an enormous dumpling impaled thereon.

Vegreville, Pop. 5,000: World's largest Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter egg) about 60 feet tall, 'nuff said.

Mundare, Pop. 2,000. World's largest Kubassa (Ukrainian sausage) Mundare Sausage is famous throughout Alberta and the city fathers decided to honour that. The structure is supposed to be 2 sausages, they rear about 65 feet into the air and look like nothing else but duelling penises.

Are there others?

motto? Not sure its official but were "the Gem of the Shenandoah Valley" and also the "Apple Capital of the World" (seriously, we have an Apple Blossom parade every year. Its cool)

Our state motto is "ever thus to tyrants" and the flag shows a bare-breasted lady Liberty standing on top of some big whig with a spear in him. Too bad the peeps here really dont ever think about that motto, cause we went for Bush in 00 and probably will go for him in 04 :(

edit: speling

No motto that I'm aware of. Local officials practically all Democratic, but the state will vote for the Repugs. What a pity.

100. I grew up in G.P.
I've wondered what it's like now. When I lived there it was lily-white and still very high-status (although Bloomfield Hills was gaining on it). Visually, G.P. was attractive for a suburb and it had (gasp!), SIDEWALKS! Something seldom seen in Minnesota suburbs. I didn't like much else about it, though, and left the minute I graduated from G.P. South.

How do you like it? (Feel free to PM me..) :hi:

101. Venice, Florida
I'm not sure if there's a motto, but we have the title of "Sharks tooth capital of the world"

"In 1994, the population of the City of Venice, was estimated at about 19,000; that of greater Venice are at 87000. The five communities cover a total of 80.3 square miles. Thirty-five miles of beaches line Sarasota County's coast. At the heart of Venice is the Downtown Historic District combining the best of past and present while enjoying a modern outlook.

Venice is one of the few cities on Florida's west coast that is not separated from the Gulf by a barrier island. Construction of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1963 made an island of the Venice municipal and commercial district and helped maintain the pattern of growth that continues today. Preserving the original character of Venice, the city created the Historic Venice District and an Architectural Review Board to ensure that new construction or modification of existing buildings conform to the northern Italian Renaissance style of the city's original architecture. Designation as a Florida Main Street City by the State further assures the city's heritage will be preserved."
