2. I actually don't mind it - a lot of times one person can quickly explain something
to another without disrupting the flow of my lecture, and the ones who are planning their weekends invariably get their comeuppance.

I can usually see when it's disturbing the neighbors, and stop it in those cases...

15. And if the whisperers do it right...
...no one will ever know whether or not they were discussing subject matter. If it's nothing more than a minor, momentary distraction, I wouldn't bother assuming.

3. I don't mind it
I tell 'em early: as long as you're not disturbing me or those around you, do what you want. They're paying for the time, after all.

I don't mind a short little conversation but two people who are gabbing the whole time makes it difficult to concentrate on whats being said. I think its totally out of line..

6. I was about to say: Annoying
Like an itch you can't get to. It becomes so tiresome that it affects your ability to concentrate at all.

5. Niether
Could be asking a quick question -- probably something you missed that an instructor said earlier.

8. If it's about the subject matter, it's ok...
... as long as it's not done in a disruptive manner.

If it's about something else, it's rude.

9. I like to make them get up and lecture.
It's great for a few laughs in their faces.

11. Depends on how boring the instructor is, but most of the time...
they should be shot on sight.

Tortured if they are on the phone in class.

These people grow up to be the assholes who yak on the phone on the bus, at concerts and movies, and text while driving motorcycles. Stop them before they kill, or at least annoy us to death.

13. While teaching an Adult Vocational Education class at night, the woman sitting right in front of my
podium pulled out her cell phone and called home.

"Hi honey, I just wanted to tell you that So and So called today... I guess dinner is off on Friday..."

I stopped talking (It was an advanced Excel course and we were talking about Pivot Tables and If Statements), and for about two minutes we just listened to her talk to her "honey". She finally noticed that the room was silent, and all eyes were on her. She stormed out without out a word, and the next day I was called to my Principal's office to explain why I would embarrass a student in front of 35 other people (that's what she told him when she called).

We laughed (after I tap danced on his desk for a few minutes).

I never saw her at the school again.

17. as a college prof
I find it extremely rude. Sometimes I will stop lecturing and just stare at them, other times I will say something. Texting is just as bad, if I catch students texting I ask them to stop, if I catch the same one again, I ask them to leave.
