I just put "Shadow of the Vampire" on my Netflix queu, and...
just to be sure I have enough Shreck, "Nosferatu"

It's been on the back of my mind for a few days-- Willem DaFoe playing Schreck as a real vampire during the filming of Nosferatu. Who thinks up this stuff?

1. Nosferatu is a good example of how easy it was to impress movies viewer in the silent movie era.
It does a horrible job of explaining itself. It has numerous unnecessary characters and scenes. The ending is very anti-climatic. the only thing it had going for it was clever camera work and Max Schreck.

Shadow of the Vampire is very good though. It almost gives Norferatu too much credit.

2. I'll think about it when I see it again, but...
never sell Murnau short-- he has a way of making the extraneous relevant. And it was over 90 years ago when any sort of horror film was a new thing.

Even today, though, Orlock is a lot creepier than most movie vampires, and still gives a chill or two. More than Lugosi or Lee, for sure.

4. I am with you on Murnau's skills
He made Sunrise after all, possibly the greatest of the silents. I wonder what he would have done if he hadn't died in a car crash. Would he have made a smooth transition to sound?

8. Carnival of Souls is great
Terrifically creepy, with a good deal of Bergman influence no less!

6. A couple of years ago, Nosferatu was shown on Halloween at
our little neighborhood movie theater, and they brought in a group that plays only chimes. Every shape and sound of chimes imaginable. This was the sound track for the movie. It was incredibly chilling and perfect for the movie.

9. I remember watching Nosferatu...
when I was a little kid and it was playing on a local TV channel on Halloween. It was around the early 90s, and I remember Orlock freaking me out.

If I ever play in another Vampire RPG game, I'm definately playing a Nosferatu.
