Any Dexter fans? What do you think of the season so far?
My take:

CONS: way too many romantic subplots, particularly LaGuerta/Batista unless she is going to screw him in some professional way rather than just in bed.

Quinn is dull, but in the wrong way.

PROS: Dexter in the burbs--the show is best when everybody but Dexter is a little sociopathic (like his vandal neighbor),but in the dull, banal way people are in real life.

John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer fits that banal mold BUT is actually scarier because of it.

The other big pro is Debra looking through her dad's old informant files to figure out who he was banging, which will eventually lead her to where she got her brother--and who his brother was (the Ice Truck Killer who tried to kill her).

TOSS-UP: Return of Lundy. CON: romantic story with Debra PRO: He's the only one who could potentially catch Dexter's dark passenger since Doakes.

1. I love it!
I like that LaGuerta/Batista have hooked up, on the QT. The only thing I didn't like was the way they got rid of his girlfriend from last season, as I thought she suited him. She was a little rough around the edges. Just saying that they had different goals was sort of a cop out, I thought.

I think the reporter that Quinn has hooked up with, is going to screw him (figuratively) for the story. I don't think its going to turn out well for him.

You are right: Debra is going to find out who the informant was that her dad was screwing, and will know about Dexter and his brother. She is already struggling with the musician boyfriend being there 24/7. She's just not that sort of gal. I think he just got offered something on a cruise ship, and she seemed sort of pleased that he would be gone. I don't know if she's going to renew her relationship with Lundy, but I think she's going to struggle with it. He sort of fascinates her, and to me, she sees him as a sort of father-figure.

LOVE, love, love John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer. He's got an approach to the part that is really scarier. And you just can't quite figure out his M. O. yet (or at least I can't), which I like.

Dexter himself isn't quite your next-door-neighbor type, which makes the neighborhood he's moved into a good setting for this season.

overall, I'm enjoying this season just as much as any other!

4. I love Dexter's neighbor's because they all make ME want to become a serial killer
and hunt them down--like the guy that pushed Cody into the pool, or the pathetic vandal, who could have gotten sympathy and support if he had just talked to people about his problems.

2. good assessment
Deb is driving me nuts acting so silly around Lundy. I could just smack her.

6. I like the silly acting, it's just the triangle and context of too many romantic storylines
Her relationship with Lundy is like someone my grandfather's age relating to someone young enough to be my kid.

It's not the sexual relationship but the idea of reaching across a grand canyon of experiences and ways of dealing the world.

The Lundys of the world expect the system to work and life to have a stable order. The Debras and younger are used to a world that's like an exploding leper--parts fall off and even explode at random intervals so you just learn to live without that part and any rules are necessarily tentative and may need to be ignored or discarded.

21. sorry,
I just think Deb is stupid when it comes to men. I like her investigation of her Father. The working relationship Deb has with Lundy is ok for me. How old is Deb anyway?

3. Totally agree.
I hate what they've been doing with LaGuerta's character from the beginning. What's the point of having a strong female character with authority and then having her sleep with half the friggin' office? Doakes was bad enough (and the implication that she either slept with Dexter or made a major pass at him). Now Batista too? How unprofessional can one person be?

John Lithgow is great and I like Deb digging around.

7. she fits my idea of the more banal sociopath--most of the time, she cares for no one
and just jerks them around to help her career, like that sap she slept with to mess with the woman who took her job.

That is the only way they can redeem the Batista storyline--she sees some way she can use him to get something she wants.

5. Dexter's wife needs to die
She drives me up the freakin' wall with her constant nagging. Every other episode she's complaining about how Dexter doesn't do enough.

I agree that there are too many subplots - especially LaGuerta and Batista. The writers just threw those two together and it makes no sense to me. I like Dexter in the burbs, but the weird side plot about the father of the idiot kid busting the windows was just silly. The writers should have stuck with the obvious and made the kid the vandal instead of his dad.

I love Lithgow so far, love Lundy, and I'm ok with the love triangle involving Debra...mainly because I really like Debra and want to see more of her (as well as her investigating her dad). I'm not crazy about the corrupt cop story line involving Debra's partner though because it feels like a distraction. Plus I'm tired of the bully cop giving Dexter a hard time storyline since we dealt with that last season already.

What is the name of Dexter's co-worker? He cracks me up and I hope the writers don't change his character.

8. the idiot kid is going to have sex with Astrid and that will put him on Dexter's radar
The kid will have a moment of clarity and realize she's easy pickings, then Dexter, like any father, will want to kill him. But unlike most fathers, he has the means to do so.

I always say that the hardest part about having daughters would be finding a house with a backyard big enough to bury all their boyfriends.

Do you mean the Asian guy, Masuka or Matsuka or something? Eventually, they got to give him some kind of twisted shit to be involved in to deepen his character.

12. Yeah,
$10 says they hook up LaGuerta and Masuka just for the awkward "eww" day-after at the office.

I like the interpretation of LaGuerta as banal sociopath, except few of her hookups actually help her career. She's always involved with underlings. What was Dexter ever going to do for her career? Or Battista? Really she could have stolen the credit for Doakes' bust whether she was sleeping with him or not, so that doesn't make sense either.

I guess what really bothered me was when her Haitian replacement was set up to look like a super incompetent idiot because she let her personal problems with her boyfriend interfere with her work, but LaGuerta is supposed to be better despite sleeping with half the guys she works with?

I think she's got some major self-sabotage issues to work through at the least.

13. I agree about Rita!
She is annoying the shit out of me. Poor Dexter. When she was shaking that rattle in his face singing Karma Chameleon at the top of her lungs I wanted to snatch it and throw the stupid thing out the window. She's only gotten worse through the seasons, and I'm tired of her crap. Someone needs to tell her she's acting like her mother.

I don't get the thing about Maria and Angel, either. I like Angel with the other detective, and I'm not satisfied with the way the writers ended that relationship.

Lithgow as the Trinity Killer is freaking awesome!!! He's creepy, especially the part with the ashes. I can't wait to see who notices that first.

I have always liked Lundy. He has a Cheshire Cat smile. He looks like he knows everyone's secrets, and that makes me just uncomfortable enough when he's around to really pay attention. I don't think Deb is going to end up with Anton or Lundy.

Masuka totally rocks!! I LOVE his big giant truck blaring country music. It's not anything that you would expect from the sex-crazed lab geek. He has some of the best lines in the show. I don't think they will change him.

I can't wait until tomorrow's episode.

9. Lithgow creeps me the hell out. He's perfect.
I hate the wifey. She's the worst since Nate's wife on Six Feet Under. I was afraid they'd jumped the shark when they got married, but Dexter as a father is happily creepy too. Like Carradine.

18. I thought the vandal neighbor was a jump-the-shark moment
as well as Dexter's accident where nobody found nothing. It seems like the show is straining a bit this season.

just to be a contrarian ...

I've watched this show since the very first episode, and have loved it. That said, I don't need to see Lundy again, I love Lithgow as an actor, yet I haven't clicked into his performance yet. The subplots are fine. My favorite nemesis characters in past years are Jimmy Smits and the guy who played Doakes, I'm just not feeling this season yet.

20. that was Jimmy Smits best work ever, and I wish they hadn't killed Doakes. The worst
was the crazy Brit chick. She was like a bad soap opera character. She had one good scene though when Dexter tried to scare her off by taking her to the makeshift morgue, and instead of being repulsed, she asked if she could touch a corpse.

22. I loved Doakes
'I'm looking at you', and you gotta do the two-finger thingey pointing at your eyes, and then pointing at Dexter. That was classic!
