1. Ah. This is the house that inspired Stephen King's "Rose Red"
I believe.

3. Oh, that is just TOO weird! I was just telling somebody about this house this morning.
We are real estate appraisers and we were talking about the ONE job we never would want to have to face. I brought up the Winchester Mansion, and he'd never heard of it--so we had to look it up.

Amazing place.

4. I haven't been there since I was a kid ...
I didn't realize it was so sprawling. Weird, wild stuff.

6. I should bring my kids next time we're in the Bay Area.
Family still lives there (East Bay, though) so we can maybe make the trek over. My nine-year-old LOVES this kind of stuff.

9. I went there in 1963
MD and I were spending a couple of months with her sister and family in San Jose
I liked the climate in the Bay area, but this was a particularly hot and muggy day and I got a god awful migraine about halfway thru the tour
The place IIRC didn't have a lot of ventilation
I'd had a couple of migraines before (and none since, thankfully) and my vision was so f'ed up I could hardly see going up and down stairs, through passages, etc
It is a fascinating place and you don't realize how sprawling it really is when inside
