HELP! U.S. area codes for a Canadian!
If you lived outside of the US, like in Canada, but had to choose a US area code for your new phone number, what would you choose and why?

This is the list I have to choose from: http://www.magicjack.com/9/areacodes.asp
Apparently, later on if they get some Canadian area codes I can change it, but for now I have to pick a US one.

1. Do you have an affinity for a certain state in the U.S.? If not, close your eyes
and touch your screen. :hi:

3. Got a newer map?
This one is a decade old. I can see that Minnesota is missing two area codes, 763 and 952.

2. Ooh, I'd go with 917.
But that's just because I've kind of fallen in love with New York City.

5. I've always been partial to my own "409" area code
Not only is it a southeast Texas area code, but it's also the name of an old Chevrolet car engine (and Beach Boys song) and a line of cleaning products. What more could you ask for? haha

That's northern Minnesota, which is right next to southern Manitoba. Or you could be hep and get 612 (Minneapolis) or 651 (St Paul & burbs). :hi:

10. A 212 area code shows the world that you are the coolest and best
but you probably can't get that - so go with 646 or 917.

18. pick one where you have friends in the US?
If you have a friend in the US you speak to on the phone a lot, find an area code that is a local call for them. That way they can call your MagicJack number as a local (free) call!

23. I'm planning on getting Magic Jack next month.
Have you tried it out yet? How's the sound quality?

Nice sound quality would be great, but for the prices they charge, I don't care if it sounds like talking into a tin can.

31. The three biggest drawbacks to Magic Jack
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 11:06 PM by Sebastian Doyle
1)Area codes may not be available in your area (even if you're not in Canada). I've had one for over two years, and I still don't have a number in my area code. Though at least I have one in the same state, and I have other arrangement to route local calls in.

2) It is a Windows device. There may also be a Mac version, but sorry Linux users..... nothing yet. :(

3)And since it's a USB device, your computer always has to be on in order for the phone line to be operational. Some people leave their computers on 24/7 for any number of reasons, others don't, so it depends on how you feel about that.

Call quality is comparable to any other VOIP service. There were a few minor network outages when the company was still really new, but I think they have worked most of the bugs out of their system.

For $19.95 a year, it's a great deal. Certainly beats that overpriced shit that Comcast is selling.

36. Yeah, I looked in to all of that.
I have a cell phone, mostly I just want this for outgoing calls and long distance. They are adding Canadian area codes (I asked) and once they do I'll be able to switch my number to a CA one. I'm running Windows, and I'm a computer-on type of person. But, I will always have my cell. I defiantly don't think it's a replacement for a cell/land line, but it seems like a great product for avoiding minute overage charges on cells or for people who call long distance a lot (which I used to do before I went cell-only). I've heard good things about the quality, and I'm glad to hear more from you :) Basically I'm just trying it out for 30 days, but I have a feeling I'll stick with it. $20/year for unlimited long distance in US and Canada?! It'll pay for itself after just a few calls to my sisters in Toronto, nevermind all my friends! Hell, it'll pay for itself just with all the calls I have to make during the day. I always seem to go over on my daytime minutes, but never enough to warrant upping my plan. it's usually only 5-10 extra, but say it's $8/m extra, the thing will pay for itself in under 3 months.

What's the voicemail like? Software? Are most of the glitches fixed? I'm not too worried about outages, as I will always have another method of calling, but I'm curious.

I hate using my cell all the time, especially for lengthy conversations (which I sometimes like to have). A good friend bought me a bluetooth device that converts your cell to a landline phone, but with it going from cell to bluetooth to cordless phone, the quality was for shit, and I had continual problems with the pairing (still not sure if it was the device, my phone, my phones OS, what). But eventually, I just gave up. And using that, I didn't avoid the other problems of cell use mentioned above.

I used to work for comcast! haha, thankfully I never had to deal with their phone service issues (if you ever call for tech support, you're probably calling Canada!) Shaw (our big cable company) has a great phone service when you compare it to other landline phones at least in my area. It's VOIP but not like Vonage, it costs about $20-$50 depending, and has every feature and unlimited LD in Canada, the US, and a handful of other countries. I used to have it, and it was very very reliable (even in power outages it had battery backups that lasted 12 hours) and you could NOT tell the difference from a regular phone. I just can't afford anything right now, but $20/year?! I can manage that :D
