2. I know who he is.
Wasn't he in The James Gang, and briefly Deep Purple?

5. I saw his brother's band in the ealy 80's
he was drummer. They weren't memorable. His brother must have been very much younger than him.

10. cool
he seemed good enough, there just wasn't a lot of talent around him, iirc. After seeing this thread I went to the Tommy Bolin page and there is a whole catalogue of stuff put out by his estate. I like his solo work - like Private Eyes and Teaser. Teaser is a better LP, I think, but PE has the more memorable songs.

8. I love his solo stuff, but...
boy did he suck in Deep Purple. I have live vinyl and video. He didn't even play the songs right. I think he may have been high. The guy would have to have been the most inconsistent player on the planet otherwise. Bolin and Purple did a really good studio album (Come Taste the Band) though. The James Gang albums he did were pretty good too. And, of course, the stuff he did with Billy Cobham was nothing less than astonishing. I still have all of this stuff.

My band, back in the day, did 'Owed to G' and 'Homeward Strut'.
