11. Well the OP does say they are from Minnesota
so the premise may still hold true!

13. Why would Minnesota have signs in Chinese?
I lived in Shanghai for 5 years. I took the subway to work every day. That's the Shanghai subway, line 10. If the exit sign listing the streets was a little bigger, I could probably tell you which stop it was.

14. how did you like Shanghai?
I've been twice and like the city, but hate the heat & humidity. I ask because my wife will likely eventually get a job that has her move there for a few years at least.

16. It's great for a few years.
The weather absolutely sucks all the time except for a week or two in April and a week or two in October. On the other hand, everything is air conditioned so you're OK as long as you're not into outdoorsy activities.

You can live dirt cheap if you want to, or find just about anything from home if you pay a bit more. 75 cent DVDs are the best thing ever. I was way ahead of everyone at home on recently released movies and TV shows.

There aren't a ton of things to do in Shanghai itself unless you're *really* into shopping. The only "must see" is the Shanghai Museum. There's a few good day trips like Hanghzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Zhujiazhao but mostly you'll want to save up your vacation time for longer trips to other cities. After five years it was starting to feel like I was only working in Shanghai to save up money to get the hell out of Shanghai.

The crowding, pollution, shoving, shoddy quality of everything, and relentlessly chipper "Everything's just great! If only those Tibetan thugs would stop picking on us" started to get me down after a while.

But on a pretty modest salary, I had a much higher standard of living in Shanghai than I did in the US.

17. One thing I noticed about air conditioning in China
the quality can really vary - even within a mall/retail area... you're walking along and you go from too cold, to warm and then to comfortable and back to warm again all within a few hundred feet of walking.

And, I liked Nanjing & Hangzhou when I was there, Suzhou not as much, but it wasn't bad.

18. Yeah, I love the huge department stores
that set the a/c to 50 when it's 110 outside and then throw open all the doors. Creates a really interesting series of microclimates.

7. oh dear
My knees are so messed up I can hardy walk anymore, but my kids don't want me to get a motorized chair because they
think I'll end up weighing 400 pounds. I'm not going to get one. I'm getting new knees next month.

9. Good choice. My wife got both knees replaced, now goes to a gym
3 days a week, and I no longer have to walk slow to walk with her.
She had years of continuous pain, now gone completely.

Good luck.

10. Obese: from sitting at the fucking computer too much. Dumb: Smart
enough to know that neither of the pics was of Americans, smart enough not to vote for Republican presidents.
