52. Oh, you guys are making me feel SO DAMNED OLD.
I actually heard Ray Stevens play when I worked at an amusement park (my very first real job). Naturally, I have vivid memories of most of his hits. In concert, he would work up "The Streak" into quite a routine, with plenty of double entrende. I don't know whether he was on something or not.

By the way, the top songs on my birthday were "It's All in the Game" by Tommy Edwards (I suspected as much, since it was the big hit of the year in the States) and "Carolina Moon/Stupid Cupid" by Connie Francis (on the U.K. side of things).

It was one of Ray Stevens' very few non-comedic songs. Hard to believe this same man wrote the Streak...

Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 02:34 PM by Hand
It was a big hit in its time, but the only one that Gogi Grant ever had.

Lyrics:

The Wayward Wind Lyrics

Written by Herb Newman and Stan Lebowsky

Oh, the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

In a lonely shack by a railroad track
He spent my younger days
And I guess the sound of the outward bound
Made him a slave to his wand'ring ways

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

Oh I met him in a border town
He vowed we'd never part
Tho' he tried his best to settle down
I'm now alone with a broken heart

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind
The next of kin to the wayward wind

Eddy Arnold, Patsy Cline, and Neil Young (!) all recorded it later in slightly revised form. In the original, GG had a pretty voice, but the backup music was bloody awful.

on that record. He narrated a story in rhyme set to light precussion and orchetration and background singers.

I heard him try to sing when he did the Macys parade. The guy had a great speaking voice but couldn't carry a tune to save his life.
