1. Blackie
Blackie lived to be at least 40 years old, 28 of those years were spent in Blackie's pasture, a field that required no fence.

A cavalry horse in his youth, Blackie later became a cutting horse at rodeos, appearing in the Salinas, California, rodeo although his owner, Anthony Connell, doesn’t remember the year. He was retired to a private pasture at the corner of Tiburon Boulevard and Trestle Glen Road when he was 12 years old. Mr. Connell visited him daily, as did children and adults alike who could be seen regularly feeding Blackie carrots, sugar, and hay.

Those who lived in the area when Blackie was alive considered him as belonging to everyone. In spite of his age and swaybacked condition, many felt he still exhibited a military air and pride that came from having been a great horse in his early years. Back then the Army stabled horses at the Presidio. In the spring they saddled up, rode to Yosemite, and patrolled the park all summer. When winter arrived they Blackie returned to the Presidio. Blackie was one of the horses used on this detail.

I meant to have posted there.

Blackie sounds as if he were a great horse and well-deserving of the respect and love he seems to have received.

2. My dear brentspeak!
They're all magnificent animals!

But my heart belongs to Secretariat! He was such an incredible runner...so fast, so strong...

He made the other horses look as though they were standing still...

Incredible animal!

I just got word that they are making a Secretariat movie. Diane Lane will play the part of Mr Penny Chenery. (Owner)
Below is a link about the film, I so hope they don't mess it up.

57. It's the big red thoroughbred for me too.
I loved hearing a story of a time when he was not working as hard as usual, goofing off in training. He lost a race. He walked by the horse in the winners circle and he didn't like it one bit. Trainer said he NEVER goofed off in training after that day. HE decided he liked winning better than not winning and HE decided to work.

Saw a film about him after he was retired. Can't recall the horse across the fence from him, another winning racer though. Both horses older and far over their racing weights, but both competitors and champions still, they would greet each other over the fence, then turn to stand side by side. As if they heard the crack of the gate in their memories, they would take off running, racing each other along side the rail fence that was between them. Just two old guys, remembering when and showing joy at still having a run in them each morning. It made me cry to watch it.

36. Misty wasn't fictional; in fact you can still see her at the museum
in Chincoteague. Paul and his sister were/ are very real-- Paul died in a car accident in his twenties-- I think his sister is still living in the next town over. Their grandparent's house is still there, you can drive by and see it. The names of so many people in that book (the fire chief, etc) can be found at the local cemetary.

Kind of a rank old gelding who couldn't stand another horse being in front of him. Raced to age 15 I beleive, always carrying ridiculous loads, and consistently winning.

76. I never saw it.
The thought of Bruce Willis playing him made me a little nauseous. I need to see it though at some point, I collect as much postmodern pop culture stuff that references him as possible. Hardly anyone remembers him today, but he's still around.

79. The only remotely famous horse I have known was Echol's Dandy
who was by Texas Dandy, a horse that was a bit more famous (read his wiki page), Older Quarter Horse enthusiasts might know him.
