"How Come You're Not Wearing Green Today?"
"Because I'm not Irish."

"But it's St. Patrick's Day?"

"...and?"

"And you wear green on St. Patrick's Day."

"No I don't."

"Well, you should."

"Why?"

"Because it celebrates Irish culture."

"But I'm not Irish."

"That's not the point."

"What is the point?"

"The point is you should wear green, it's a holiday."

"Aren't I at work right now?"

"Yes."

"Then it's not a holiday."

"But you should still wear green just to be in the spirit."

"But I don't have any Irish spirit, I'm Italian."

"But there's green in the Italian flag."

"So?"

"So isn't that close enough?"

"Are you on drugs?"

"No."

"Why do you care if I wear green or not?"

"Because it's St. Patrick's Day and everyone wears green on St. Patrick's Day."

"Everyone?"

"Yes, everyone. See, I'm wearing green."

"That's nice."

"Don't you have any green on?"

"No."

"You have something against the Irish?"

"Not really."

"Not really?"

"No, I just chose to wear blue today."

"But blue isn't an Irish color."

"It isn't?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Oh, well I guess I don't have the Irish spirit then."

"Obviously."

"Is this really that important to you?"

"No, not really, but wearing green is fun."

"More fun than wearing blue?"

"I'd imagine so, at least on St. Patrick's Day."

"You are on drugs, aren't you?"

----

And people wonder why I don't like St. Patrick's Day.

3. Just tell them that an IRA bombing killed some of your relatives
and that you see no reason to celebrate Ireland. That ought to shut them up.

4. no kidding... I felt like such a tool today
it wasn't until after lunchtime that I remembered what day it is today, and if I had known I would NOT have worn green

I wore green today, without even realizing :dunce:

So now, everyone is like "oh you wore green" etc. They think I'm one of them!!!! ('them' being people who do this sort of thing and make a fuss if everyone else isn't)

I'm part Irish, but just don't care about St Patrick (whoever he was) and the silly green rule..

13. The same thing happened to me.
I forgot it was St Patrick's Day but I wore green anyways. This conversation with my boss was one of the highlights of my day :eyes:

Hey you're in the spirit!
What do you mean?
You're wearing green.
And your point is?
It's St Patrick's Day
Oh, I forgot.
Sure, sure, then why did you wear green
I look good in green
I think this should be a paid holiday.
We get 14 paid holidays a year, that's not enough for you?

14. Whenever my boss suggests a paid holiday, I agree fervently!
"We get 14 paid holidays a year, that's not enough for you?" is something that I would never say to my boss.

17. I love paid holidays too but
she isn't high enough in the company to have any control over that. Recently some people at my job have been pushing for some unrealistic benefits and I think it's causing a backlash by the people who do have the power to change that sort of thing.

12. Aren't St. Paddy's and Cinco De Mayo "Budweiser" holidays?
As in not really celebrated in their home countries, but celebrated and promoted (by corporations) in the US in order to move more product?

16. essentially
just another commercial drinking holiday.

i find that there are more people wearing green who are not irish or have anything to do with ireland than real irish who imo "don't give a rats arse." about the damn holiday.

yay boiled dinner

19. In Ireland...
...St. Patrick's Day is a religious feast day.

People go to church.

Some Irish actually fly over to the States to get butt-wasted on St. Pat's, cause it's a boring time back home.

Personally, when folks at work asked why I wasn't wearing green today (I am Irish, and I make a point of NOT wearing green on St. Pat's -- I have a few good beers at home and eat Shepherd's pie or lamb stew instead), I said:

"Well, Im drunk. Is that good enough?"

That shut most of them up.

26. ah I knew you were Irish (and that you were drunk)
that explains a lot. I don't wear green usually because I am Irish and I think that is enough that I actually AM Irish. I did wear all of my cool intricate knot Irish jewelry today though. I also don't like the "slobbering drunk" quality of the holiday, either. I went and got 2 bottles of Guiness and 2 bottles of Harp lager and I will go from there. I also listened to the Pogues in the car and wailed along.

Hey I made it out of the 700 club!

They say that to them, it's a day of celebrating the death of their culture.

For their sake I don't wear green.

32. Neopaganism isn't the same as classical paganism
Remember, the pagan Celts that St. Patrick Christianized were slaveowning, human sacrificing, occasionally cannibalistic warriors who liked to hop in boats and rape & slaughter the innocent villagers on the other side of the channel for sport (when they weren't busy killing each other, that is). Neopaganism takes the good parts of Celtic mysicism while leaving off the bad, but we should never forget that the Irish of the 4th century weren't neopagans, but classical pagans. St. Patrick's actions saved many thousands of Irish lives and helped to end the extreme brutality that existed in Eire prior to his return...it was a good thing.
