And the first and only car that has my name on the title is a Mustang convertible I bought for my spouse for his birthday last year.

(I haven't had a driver's license since 1971.)

With my husband, let's see: Ford Galaxie, Ford sedan, Pontiac something, and several hand-me-downs from his parents, the Camry Wagon (Just sold) and the Hybrid Prius...

Around 8, I guess...

since then I have rescued many junkers and used them to get where I wanted to go. Suburu, Ford escort, Dodge truck, Ford Festiva -my personal favorite- and a few nondescript others. I now drive a company car; a 2009 White Chevy Impala.

6. About 40 cars and 20 motorcycles. Used to get bored real fast.
Found it was much cheaper trading in cars than wives. :)

Current ride is a 2002 PT Cruiser that I bought new and has about 70K miles on it. Guess I've either gotten cheap or settled down in my old age.

Like a fool I kept throwing money at repairs for cars I should've junked. I'd be way ahead of the game. '77 Fords and Chevy's were my downfall. Not a good year at all.

13. I kill Corallas (and Camrys)
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 02:55 AM by Believing Is Art
1986 Rolla - My first car in '99. The muffler kept falling off and some of the gears didn't work quite right. Death by age.

1997 Camry - My parents forced me to lend it to my younger brother against my will right after he got his license. A couple hours later, we get the phone call . . .

1996 Rolla - This one lasted awhile and is my only true automobicide. Hit black ice and started to go into a ravine. The car snagged itself on a rock thus saving me. To this day, I am convinced it sacrificed its life for mine. I love you, man.

2004 Rolla #1 - After 6 blissful weeks, a Dodge Ram decided it didn't need to stop for gridlock on the highway. It met the back end of the Rolla at a cool 55 mph.

1995 Escort - The loaner. It survived my deadly touch.

2004 Rolla #2 - It's still alive. No one is quite sure how.

26. I bought a 1995 Corolla in 1999 (with 12k miles on it)... By 2003 the oil leaked an 2005 the
transmission fluid leaked too.

PIECE OF $H!+.

I will say this, the Corolla was the car I did a 360 on while traversing black ice too. Did a 360 and kept going, having spun into it and continuing onward once physics was done having its orgasm...

The Ford Escort is a good vehicle too...

Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 08:20 AM by Tobin S.
1976 Chevy Scottsdale stepside pickup- it's a classic now and you know what they say about wishing you had your first car. I blew up the motor in it. I traded it for a

1976 Chevy Impala station wagon. That was a fun car. It's got to be one of the biggest ever made and gas was less than a buck a gallon when I owned it. It died a natural death. Rod knocking. I sold it for $250 to a guy who was going to put a good engine in it and use it as a work truck.

Then I made the mistake of buying a brand new Ford Ranger when I was 18. I got laid off from work and sold it for what I owed on it. Took a big loss.

Then I bought a more sensible 1981 VW Rabbit for $750 from a preacher man. It was a fun little car, but it was a diesel and that car gave me hell in the winter. I did hang onto it though until the transmission died in it. A guy from the junk yard gave me $50 for it and towed it away.

Then I bought a 1983 Mazda B2000 pickup from the neighbor across the street for $400. It was a great running little truck but was a serious rust bucket. And the doors were scary. Sometimes they wouldn't latch even though you slammed them and they would fly open when you were making a turn.

At the same time that I had the Mazda I also owned a Chevy Sprint I'm thinking it was an early 80s model. It had a three cylinder engine in it, but was only running on 2. I bought it off of my sister for $200. Never could figure out what was wrong with it.

I traded both the Mazda and the Sprint to the trailer park handy man in return for making my 1963 trailer winterized.

Then I bought a 1989 Isuzu pick up. That was 1996. I owned that truck until 2005 when it blew a head gasket. The truck wasn't worth the $1500 fix. That was a good little truck, though. Never had to do anything to it except preventative maintenance up until it kicked the bucket. I gave the carcass to a friend. I don't know where it ended up.

Then I bought my current ride. A 2002 Chevy S-10. It's been a good little truck for me. It has about 94,000 miles on it and I haven't had too many problems out of it. The most expensive repair was $250 for a clogged heater core. I've worked that truck and the bed tells the tale. I'm going to keep it until it goes the way of my Isuzu.

Then I'm going to buy my first new car since I lost all that money on the new Ranger. I'm 36 now.

Been driving work (rental) vehicles last two years, and I'm looking at used Jeep Wranglers. 49yo.

18. Let me count them up....
'79 Pontiac Trans Am. Picked up new at the factory. Fun to drive before it fell apart at 39000 miles. Total piece of s&%$.

'81 Subaru Hatchback. Bought new. Great car. Economical, reliable. Eventually was totaled in and accident.

'84 Pontiac Fiero. Cute to look at. Total piece of s%$#. Sold it as soon as I realized what a total money black hole piece of garbage it was.

'81 (I think) Chevy Luv pickup. Bought it used with 90K miles on it. Nearly ran the wheels off of it, with virtually no mechanical problems (Of course - the drivetrain wasn't built by GM). It eventually rusted to destruction with about 160K miles on it.

'86 Mercury Lynx. Ugly, bland, forgettable, but incredibly reliable and economical. Sold it to another pilot who needed an airport car.

'90 Ford Taurus. Good car. Reliable, roomy, comfortable. My ex kept it after our divorce and destroyed it through neglect and lots of wrecks (she was hard on vehicles).

'89 Toyota extended cab pickup. Bought it in '90 with about 20K miles on it. One of the best vehicles I ever owned. Put over 100K miles on it with no troubles. Kids outgrew the back seat. Sold it in '97.

'94 Toyota Corolla. Bought used in '96 with 13K miles on it. Used by my present spouse. Great car. Reliable, economical. Totaled in '04 (not her fault - chain reaction accident while she was stopped at a stop sign). Had nearly 90K miles on it. Severe accident, yet she and my daughter escaped with very minor injuries (mostly abrasions from the airbags).

'97 Ford F-150 Pickup (extended cab). Bought new. Great truck. Never a problem of any kind with it. Sold it last year.

'03 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Bought with 14K miles on it for wife, to replace the aforementioned Corolla. I hate driving it, but she loves it. Have had no trouble with it. Has about 70K on it now.

'07 Jeep Compass. Bought new. Great vehicle so far.

The only trend I've ever notice with my cars is that GM products (Pontiac in particular) pretty much suck.

I had to switch to SUVs a little after I took up the double bass.

Before that I'd put it in the back of the Torino and about a foot of the scroll and the neck would stick out of the back window...not good.

Of the brands, I would rate them (from worst to best);

Toyota
Pontiac
Honda
Ford
Subaru

Ford and Subaru are a virtual tie... time will tell. My next car, if I'm alive in 7~10 years, will likely be a Subaru or a Ford.

30. It just dawned on me I've only somewhat ever owned an American car
Not yet legal to drive, I took possession of my older brother's Mercury something or other in the early 80s. That's the only US car I've ever (kinda) owned.

The rest:
76 VW Rabbit (kiwi green) had passive restraint shoulder belts connected to the doors in a way-ahead-of-its-time way

81 Mazda 626 (sadly, the lameness of this car was inversely proportional to how cool I thought it was)

85 VW Quantum (one of the best cars I've ever owned)

91 VW GTI (had great potential, but ended up a lemon)

85 Saab 900 Turbo (amazing car even though it was 100 years old when I bought it)

91 Saab 900 Turbo (I just couldn't quit them)

98 Audi A4 2.8Q (the bare minimum needed for VT winters - good to me so far, although a bit on the boring side)

39. Had access to seven different cars (excluding any rentals) as a daily drive.
0th - Peugeot 405, was my dad's car, he taught me some driving in this vehicle, though I managed to scare him to bits with my driving. Perhaps I was practicing driving in America...

1st - 1997 Mazda Protege, was my wife's car, we shared this vehicle, it was leased. She helped me learn in this vehicle, though I passed my test in my sis-in-law's Nissan. Big wreck on I-40/I-85 in 1999, skidding on some spilled diesel and into the path of a big lorry which jack-knifed, and my vehicle ended up bent like a horseshoe after bouncing off both guard rails... definite write off but that little car saved my life. No ticket was issued since even the rescue squads couldn't stand up on the road.

2nd - 2000 Mazda Protege, again my wife's car, but we shared. New from lease, returned at end.

3rd - 1998 Plymouth Neon, my car, financed. Transmission began to fail, but at that time we also filed bankruptcy, so we surrendered it and replaced with...

4th - 2000 Ford Windstar. Shared for a time, eventually became wife's vehicle, we financed this vehicle. Been pranged 3 times, the 3rd time has taken it off the road but we still own it and it's repairable.

5th - 1984 Ford Escort. Cheap $500 vehicle, trying not to finance another vehicle. It died 9 months later, towed and scrapped.

6th - 2004 Ford Focus. Needed reliable transport, when Escort died acquired this vehicle from new, my proper own new vehicle. It survived two deer hits and one off-roading expedition. Just before Christmas, with only a few payments to go, it got smacked in the side by a red-light runner, and was a total loss.

7th - 2007 Jeep Liberty. After the red-light-runner hit me, I needed a new vehicle, so I narrowed down to 3: Mercury Milan, Honda Fit, and Jeep Liberty. I didn't want another Focus because I wanted a change. Any of the above three would have been nice but three factors made me pick the Liberty: 1) I *love* the Jeep Wrangler by looks and known capabilities, 2) I have a need for off-road capability (that doesn't involve running into the ditch) and want to feel that I have a good vehicle for snow if/when it happens, and 3) my insurance company advised me it was the cheapest to insure. Therefore I got my "compromise Jeep" and what's more, I find it is the most fun vehicle I have driven, though the Focus and the Honda Fit come close. This little beast is being financed, ironically by the insurance company.

40. Two
The first car I drove was 'my' car, but registered in my parents' names. It was a 1982 Honda Prelude I drove from August 1988 to December 1990. It got 33MPG in combined city and highway driving and it was a blast to drive.

The cars I actually own/owned are a 1991 Jeep Wrangler and a 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T Coupe. A tree limb fell on the Stratus a little over a month ago during a tornado and totaled it. :( Now I'm back in the Wrangler, which has 190,000+ miles on it and I still haven't decided what my next car will be.
