1. Both are baby horses.
A foal is any new baby horse. A colt is a boy baby horse.

And since the But Tutcher will likely ask, a girl baby horse is a filly. :)

4. OMG!
You must be on his wavelength, I said a foal is a little baby horse and a colt is like a boy toddler, he said, "what is a girl toddler horse called then" and I had the answer ready thanks to you! :fistbump:

8. He's a question-asker, that one.
I figured if he knew what the boys were called he'd want to know about the girls, too!

2. For important questions consult a librarian
In my town you can have chat sessions with actual reference librarians.

I like to try and stump them.

5. You shoot foals with colts
It's kinda like if the vessel can carry another boat, it's a ship, and if it goes on a ship then it's a boat

6. we usually say "horse colt"and that means an intact boy baby
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 04:19 PM by Kali
but colt is also used, foal is generic for baby (and can be used as a verb - "the mares are foaling this spring," "he was foaled in march") filly is a girl. Generally these terms are used for about a year but I have seen colt ad filly used until 3 or so as well. ("he is going to start riding that filly/colt this summer")
