Who the hell says nothing good happens in Kansas (MUSIC ALERT)
Well, ok, fair enough. I always say that nothing ever happens in Kansas.

But, it looks like I was wrong.

www.wakarusafestival.com

Some of you DUers may be fans of jambands and other types of music that fit with that Genre. In that case, you are no doubt aware of the Bonnaroo festival that will be in Tennessee in June.

The very next week, it turns out (June 18-20), my town of Lawrence, KS, will be hosting the Wakarusa Festeval.

Acts already scheduled include:

OAR
Robert Randolph and the Family Band
North Mississippi All Stars
Galactic
Particle
Leftover Salmon
Jazz Mandolin Project
Derek Trucks Band
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
The Big Wu
Ekoostik Hookah
Shanti Groove
Drums and Tuba
Bockman's Euphio
Speakeasy

etc...

I just found out about this today, actually, and am very excited about it.

And just five miles from where I live, too!!!!!

3. Lawrence is in Kansas,
but it sure isn't "Kansas". It's an oasis in a desert of conservative crap.

4. Yeah, true, but you would never know it
It is an outstanding oasis, because just about everyone who lives in this town and the immediate area is at the very least a moderate. You have to look hard to find a hardcore Bush supporter (except for the College Rethugs)

I just checked your profile and see you're in DENVER!

I've lived in Kansas and I've lived in Colorado.
When I lived in Colorado (Boulder admittedly) I actually began to miss rednecks. At least they were real.

& last I checked Colorado Springs is pretty conservative!!!
and isn't the secret UFO landing site for Bush and his aliens out at DIA?

Flame war flame war

:)

13. Lived in Kansas City for 23 years.
Went to school in Lawrence and moved to denver 5 years ago. I'm pretty familiar with everything between KC and Denver. :)

Boulder is a little fake, but I would live there any day over Kansas. KCMO is okay however. I agree, Colorado Springs is the pits. You'll get no flames from me...

5. Winfield Bluegrass Festival

every September, also in Kansas

I lived in Lawrence for five years. Maybe I'll make a trip back for this.

They're doing this at Clinton Lake? I hope they don't tear the area up too much. That's a state park. I'm not sure I get that part. Or are they doing it on private land?

Also, having lived in other spots in Kansas, Lawrence is great, but it's not the only cool place there. Other places are more hidden.

6. Yeah, I have actually been to that before
And it was a great time.

From what I can tell this will be at Clinton Lake. Or if not that then somewhere very near. I don't think the area will be too messed up though.

7. You beat me to it
I was going to mention the Winfield Bluegrass Festival. I know people who schedule vacations around that!

And of COURSE good things happen in Kansas - I was conceived, born and bred there! ;-)

My little town is actually semi-famous, considering.

11. How long since you've been there?
And how old are you (approximately)?

Just wondering . . . that's where my parents and grandparents are from, and I've still got a bunch of cousins there. If we're anywhere close to the same age (I'm 40) maybe you know some of them.

15. I was born there, but we moved when I was about 3. But, we visited my
grandparents at least once a year in the summer. My GPs lived in the Winfield Apts, just by downtown and by the library, and I had many summer friends in the area. I'm 44, the last time I was there would have been about 20 years ago.

I get homesick sometimes, it was really a pleasant little town; nothing but good memories for me.

By now, I suppose Sprawl-Mart has invaded, but man, I have memories of going downtown!

9. Blondeatlast happened in Kansas--Winfield, home of Gilligan's
Mary Anne, to be precise!

It just doesn't get better than that.

RIGHT?

12. Stay away from the brown acid
Clinton lake sounds like a great place. I used to visit Lawrence back in the seventies, had a dealer going to grad school there.

14. Hey! I happen in Kansas!!
Even in my advanced age, I may partake of the festival. I love Lawrence, it keeps me sane (I live in Johnson County).
