1. Did they really?
I hadn't heard that. How sad.

I was thinking that they originally said that the area they were suspecting was miles and miles deep. All I could think was that they'd never find anything.

3. Maybe it was 1,300. Yup 8000 miles would be somewhere in the middle east wouldn't it.

23. if it helps
it seems really likely from what I have read that people on board the plane probably knew next to nothing about what was going on. the fact that a distress call wasn't made at all means that the crew, at the very least, was either unconscious or dead within seconds of whatever happened (there are too many redundancies built into aircraft for full electrical systems failure without massive depressurization to be at all likely) at 35,000 feet, depressurization will knock you out within about 5 seconds, if it doesn't kill you from the shock.

so at the very least, you don't have to imagine riding a seat down to the water (I fly all the time and have looked into it) the one good thing about a midair calamity is that you will never know about it.

25. At FL 350, Time of useful conciousness after a rapid decompression will run...
about 30 to 60 seconds, depending on a number of things. Either way, not much time to be aware.

to find and retrieve them. I hope the water isn't too deep (although I am sure the appropriate deep water submersibles would be made available)

They only have enough power to broadcast for 30 days IIRC.

And one of those days is already passed.

32. Thanks, that makes sense. It's not that data will be lost after 29 days, it's that
the chance of finding it in 10,000+ foot water drops to basically zero...

34. This amazes me
Well, makes me curious that there isn't a better way to pre-arrange location finding.

For like $90 I bought a gps device that uses 3 of 24 satellites 12,000 miles away to tell me where I am within feet.

If those boxes had two beacon systems built in (assuming water is different than atmosphere), one for water, one for air) it just seems that it would near impossible to screw up.

Maybe our air fleets need an upgrade?

38. The latest I heard is that these boxes are usually mounted in
the tail. When the plane crashes, if the box has been covered in wreckage AND is in thousands of feet of water, it will be very difficult to get signals from it.

I agree with you though, it seems like one of those, "If we can land a man on the moon..." kind of things.
