OMG my poor mother fell down a flight of porch steps
I just saw the pictures and they aren't pretty but fortunately nothing was broken other than her spirit. She landed face first and fortunately an EMT happened to be driving by and witnessed the whole thing.

I guess the house where she was at (she was yardsaling) had very tall, thin steps with no handrailing whatsoever. Personally I would have sued the family but she's gracious enough to just ask for her medical bills to be covered along with getting her glasses replaced and any dental work that might need done.

I've seen steps like that and I can't imagine anyone not having some sort of handrail to have available so people can walk them safely.

2. Do you have really bad steps?
I mean if you have steps that can hold an entire foot it shouldn't be an issue but according to my mother these were really high and the whole foot barely fit on it (and she's only size 8). Some things are just common sense.

3. They're regulation size steps, about five of them
You can only fall off one side, too, which the dogs jump off all the time with no problem.

17. You are an ambulance chaser's dream.
Much cheaper to have a handrail installed than pay for a lawsuit.

19. They'll have to get past the dog first
I'm not worried.

Seriously, we don't have people at our house ever. And, if my best friend or my mom sues me, I'll kick their fucking asses.

8. She's probably a heckuva lot younger than my mom
but make sure, if her back hurts at all, that she doesn't have compression fractures of her spine. My mom was knocked over by an automatic door that closed too fast (at her senior center, of all places!) Her hip (upper part of her femur) was fractured, which she had surgery for, but they did not take x-rays of her body which would have revealed compression fractures of her spine. Her back healed crooked and that causes pain. If she had found out sooner she could have opted for injection of a plastic cement into the "cracks"which stabilizes the spine.

9. I'm glad she's ok.
Those kind of steps are awful. Our stairway inside the house only had 8" treads when we first moved here and I bounced down them a few times. It makes me wonder what people were thinking when they made them.

I'm just glad your Mom is ok. That fall had to hurt.

10. That really makes me wince just thinking about it.
That would be frightening to see, face first, dental work, Yi!, but thank god she's going to be alright.

I have a hundred year old stairway going to the second floor that would never be allowed to be built today. It has handrails but it's very steep and the steps are ridiculously short. I don't know how I'm going to die, but I figure there's a 20% chance it's going to happen on that stairway.

21. Around here, the insurance companies require a handrail
on one side of any exterior steps. We did not have a handrail at our front door steps, and we were told to install one.

22. I am very sorry she was hurt. I hope she will be okay.

That is really thoughtless that they would have people going up and down steep steps without a handrail. You have to wonder what they were thinking.

Now the bills from this will cost them any profit they made from the yard sale, and more beside. There goes their hope of making a little money to get ahead. All because they didn't think... :(
