Good morning Lounge
How are you today?

It is Friday!! :woohoo:

What are your plans for the weekend?
Mine? Putting together the shoe storage I am picking up tomorrow, planting my tomatoes in big pots, doing my household and relax.

Today I am cataloging old books. Old as in books from the 1700s and 1800s.

Picture of the Day (the complete works of Johann Wolfgang Goethe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Wolfgang_von_Goethe)

10. Good morning MissH!
You know, if I'd work in a library I'd get nothing done. I'd just want to read all day long. My friend who works in IT, her office was on the second floor of the library and she's say when she needed a break she'd go walking among the stacks, get a book and sit right down there and read! Unfortunately her office has been moved to a different building.

My weekend plans? Just a few domestic chores and finish getting stuff ready for vacation. Right now I'm at the point of "checking my list".

in a restaurant. After a while the food isn't a focus anymore. ;)

I'm leaving Thursday morning (May 21st) for vacation. I've been so stressed at work these last few months, that I rarely thought about my upcoming vacation, didn't even get excited about it. But now that I leave in a few days, I'm truly getting excited. I really, really need this time off.

How was your mushrooms and pasta last night?

How long will you be gone?

I am off Thursday and Friday next week (Thursday is a holiday in Germany) and I will go visit my mom. Either I go Wednesday straight after work or Thursday morning. Haven't decided yet.

Uhhh .... I was lazy yesterday evening after all and was a bad girl and had junk food. But I bought the ingredients, so I will either cook it tonight or tomorrow.

19. I'm leaving May 21st
and fly back on June 5th, so it's a nice long vacation.

That will be nice for you to have a long weekend and visit your Mom. I think it would be so relaxing taking the train. No such transportation here. It's always hop in the car and drive, drive, drive. ;(

Don't feel just too bad about not cooking last night. I'm trying to "clean out" my refrigerator so I've been eating leftovers all week and making do with what I've got. But I'm thinking about grilling a steak tomorrow.

And junk food? I've been craving a fast food burger and fries for weeks. So far I've not given in to that craving, but I don't know how long my will power will last.

I am very happy that we have a good public transportation system. Even though trains aren't cheap. But it is relaxing to sit in the train and read, listen to music or nap without worrying.

Give in the craving ... then I don't feel so bad

cost difference would be between pubic transportation and owning a car. Maybe I'm just so sick of driving. ;)

You know, I just may give into that craving for dinner. I've got errands to run right after work, and maybe, just maybe will pick something up at the drive-thru.

Gotta head out for work, so wishing you a great day and a grand weekend.

Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling too well. Take it easy today as well :)

I went to the exhibition on "Looting and restitution" It was a very interesting exhibition. It made us sick to the stomach how Jewish families still get denied their art. Only now, after so many of the perpetrators died, the museums start to do the right thing. A lot of the museums directors who took looted art stayed in office after WW2.
I am going to get the catalog.

24. I've heard about that
Germany had a really difficult choice at the end of the war - start over with basically no infrastructure, or keep some of the not so bad Nazis in place, just to run things. I understand why they did what they did, but it's still heartbreaking.

29. I don't know
how I would have acted in those times. But I know my family members weren't members of the party.

We also have books in our collection (standing separately) that belong to Germany. We just store them and have them available for the public. There is no question that if an heir is being found, those books will go back to the rightful owner.

the other problem is that so many records were destroyed...it's really hard for a family to prove they owned something. The whole thing makes me sad.

42. What is the bad thing
which became clear in the exhibition that they sometimes only pretend that they didn't have any records. And that is sickening.

My friend told me that someone tried to find the owners of the art Göring stole from all over Europe and that there was an exhibition about it in the U.S. Not sure who and where it was.

49. That sounds interesting
When you come to the US next, we'll have to go to the Holocaust museum in D.C. (unless you've already been there). It's amazing. I think my favorite part of it is that it celebrates those people who rescued Jews (and other people) who were being persecuted. It's nice to have that reminder that even when great evil is happening there are people who will stand up against it. That part gives me hope.

60. Yeah, I love how they are all free
it's one of the best things about the U.S., I think - that many, many museums are free or almost free. Here in Baltimore we have two art museums that are free - I doubt they compare to European art museums, but I love them. :D

I actually have a membership to the Smithsonian (so I can get the awesome magazine!) - it's really cheap, and I get discounts at the gift shop, etc., so I really should go more often.

that I work in a museum here in Frankfurt. There is an agreement that employees of the museums have free entrance to the other ones. Helps save a lot of money too.

I can't think of a museum that is free in Germany. Not even in Berlin, the capital.
I know that the British Museum and the National Gallery are for free, they just ask for a donation.

44. Oh my goodness,
this was in junior high school. I can hardly remember. A very ambitious undertaking for junior high. I think it was mainly on his play Faust, with some biography thrown in.

The most striking memory I have of the whole thing is the kitten I got that same year, whom I named Mephistopheles. My parents thought it was hilarious.

Her personality was perfect for the name, though we called her "Meff". She is still a legend in our family.

I think that the teachers in North Carolina at that school, if they had any knowledge of Goethe at all, it would have been name only, lol. I remember they didn't even know how to pronounce his name.

I got an A+. I probably could have said just about anything and they wouldn't have known the difference. These were the days long before the internet.

Oh gosh, how did you survive that week? I would go bonkers (unless I am on vacation, that is) :rolf:

I got a new computer at work this week. Love it. And I didn't have to pay for it ... best part :D

69. That was horrible !
Edited on Fri May-15-09 09:33 AM by jeff30997

No computer and I don't have a TV,well basically it's my PC that I use to watch movies or TV shows so

how did I managed to survive that week without going nuts? One word:Books.I love to read too. :)

But I never read anything from Goethe. The few classic books that I ever opened were 19th century novels

from writers like Honore de Balzac,Victor Hugo and Jules Verne(Which is very underrated IMHO).

Edited to add:

54. Good morning, Miss Honeychurch...
Tomorrow I will be waaaay in the tiniest area inside a museum submarine. I'm a volunteer and I'm the only one small enough to get into that space. I'll come out pretty greasy, but will get away with doing little work for weeks.

Then, I'm going to scrub up - no mean feat - and I will go out to dinner with friends, celebrating a birthday, then we repair to a friend's apartment where we'll see her two new kittens.

Sunday I might go to the new Trek movie.

The Goethe bookshelf is cool!

59. My father was a submarine captain...
the other volunteers didn't mind my being female, but being a skipper's kid was something else! What great folks they are, and such a nice change from folks I work with. It's really refreshing to take a break from paperwork and do something more hands-on.

The kitties' photographs aren't on a website. I'll have to work on that. They're very cute.

68. It's actually a pretty funny movie the way it depicts...
the totally dishonest supply officer by Tony Curtis. And Dina Merrill is cool in everything she's in.

Now, Down Periscope with Kelsey Grammer is a documentary, some of which was filmed on the museum submarine PAMPANITO.

I actually got to go out for a ride on a sub as a kid. It was cool.
